Sprint Reaches 2 Mln Mobile Music Downloads

Sprint announced today that it has sold more than 2 million music tracks from its over-the-air Sprint Music Store since the service debuted in October 2005. Sprint passed the one million download mark in February 2006.

“The momentum of the Sprint Music Store is remarkable and truly an industry first, with our second million downloads reached in less time than our first million,” said Nancy Beaton, Sprint’s director of entertainment and personalization. “Since we stopped offering free promotional incentives on January 14, the usage of the Sprint Music Store has actually increased, so our customers are clearly seeing the value in the convenience and ease of use of the Sprint Music Store.”

The Sprint Music Store enables customers to preview and purchase songs using their mobile phones for $2.50 apiece; users receive two versions of the song, one compressed for use on the mobile phone, and a high-quality version for their PC, which can be burned to CD using Windows Media player. Currently, the Sprint Music Store offers over 400,000 songs from four major music distributors (EMI, Sony BMG, Warner, and Universal).

In addition, the Sprint Music Store received two industry awards at the CTIA conference in Las Vegas: Wireless Week’s Excellence Award for Mobile Content and Outlook 4Mobility’s Innovation Award.
