The Fat Lady Goes Wii

Norway’s Opera Software has announced that Nintendo’s forthcoming Wii gaming console will leverage its Opera browser for Internet access. The game console will enable online navigation via the Wii’s innovating wireless motion sensor controller, and users will be able to move the cursor on screen just by moving the remote: no buttons required.

Nintendo has already licensed Opera for its Nintendo DS handheld gaming device, and the software is scheduled to be available for the DS in Japan by mid-year, although no worldwide launch has been announced.

“Nintendo is clearly visionary in leading the gaming industry into the new era in gaming, and a wonderful partner for Opera,” says Jon von Tetzchner, Opera’s CEO. “We are thrilled to expand our partnership with Nintendo, and work with them to deliver the best gaming experience on the Wii console and the Nintendo DS.”

Nintendo selected Opera for the DS because it offers a secure browsing environment which supports Web standards and is widely compatible with existing Web sites; presumably, similar consideration prompted its selection for Wii, and Nintendo will be able to leverage engineering from its Opera-for-DS efforts.

Xbox is nearing its quarter-century of oversized controllers, achievement hunting, and Halo nights. To celebrate its 25th birthday, Microsoft is letting players open a few birthday presents early. The company has released a free collection of gamerpics, profile backgrounds, themes, and a dynamic Xbox console background created by community artists Klobrille and Ben Kenobi.

The artwork is available now, ahead of the original Xbox’s 25th anniversary on November 15. Microsoft is also giving players a commemorative 25th anniversary profile badge. All you need to do is sign in to your Xbox account through a console, PC, or the Xbox mobile app before the end of 2026 to receive it.

The fate of physical game discs seems to be set in stone, with an all-digital library becoming increasingly inevitable. Microsoft, though, may at least give Xbox owners a way to bring their shelves full of physical games along for the journey.

A leaked Microsoft roadmap sent to game publishers details the planned rollout of Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital program alongside a much larger backwards-compatibility push. The document reportedly targets August for general availability, October for the full launch of original Xbox games on PC, and a gradual Xbox 360 rollout beginning in 2027.
