Finland’s Nokia has announced a software upgrade for its wireless 770 Internet Tablet. The new Tablet 2006 OS will include pre-installed support for the Google Talk instant messaging and VoIP service. The 2006 OS also offers enhanced text typing with a full-screen finger keyboard (770 users who were hoping for an separate hardware keyboard must stil hold their breaths). The software also offers an improved desktop, enhanced performance, and a “refreshed” look.

And even better is the price tag: the Tablet 2006 OS will be available for free to Nokia 770 Internet Tablet users this quarter from Nokia’s 770 Web site.

Google Talk’s instant messaging service is based on Jabber/XMPP, and the Tablet 2006 OS supports SIP-based VoIP applications, such as the free Gizmo Project by SIPPhone. The Gizmo Project can place and receive calls from standard telephone networks.

The Nokia 770 is a Wi-Fi enabled handheld device intended to put Internet communications in users’ pockets, featuring a 800 by 480 4.13-inch widescreen display, a full-screen finger keyboard, handwriting recognition features, and Bluetooth connectivity.
