Samsung Confirms 50GB Blu-ray Discs Play

So, if you skim any of the technology rumor, innuendo, and unsubstantiated gossop sites, you may have caught sight of some ripples saying that forthcoming 50 GB Blu-ray titles wouldn’t work in Samsung’s $1,000 BD-P1000 Blu-ray player.

Well, Samsung wants you to know that’s not true: according to the company, all BD-P1000 units shipped since the player hit the U.S. market earlier this year will support forthcoming dual-layer 50 GB Blu-ray titles just fine.

At the same time, Samsung has announced it is implementing a running production line change to the BD-P1000 to add Java title compatibility which will coincide with the launch of the first Blu-ray Java titles later in 2006. The revised players will also offer a modified setting for the noise filter which can provide a "slightly" sharper picture.

According to Samsung, both Java compatibility and the noise filter changes will be available as a free firmware upgrade to existing BD-P1000 players; beginning the last week of October, owners will be able to download updates from samsung.com or contact Samsung for firmware discs at 800/SAMSUNG.

Where to rent DVDs and Blu-rays as Netflix ends disc rentals

After a formidable 25-year run, Netflix has announced that it will shutter its DVD-to-mail rental service, DVD Netflix, aka DVD.com. Citing the shrinking DVD business, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos told shareholders on April 18 that the rental service would be shipping its last DVD on September 29, 2023.
And while most of the 230 million Netflix subscribers won’t miss the service -- or perhaps even knew it still existed in the first place -- DVDs and Blu-rays are still a preferred method for watching movies and TV series if you really care about quality or just don't have broadband internet.
But now that DVD Netflix is out of the game, where can people turn to rent DVDs and Blu-rays?
Well, as the news hit Twitter, two of the best alternatives chimed in, reminding their followers that they, too, still existed. GameFly -- which primarily rents video games, but also has a selection of movies for rent -- tweeted at popular kiosk-rental company Redbox with a Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid gif and the text “Out here with @redbox like … .” The two services exchanged clever gifs and tweets (Redbox and Blockbuster even exchanged jabs) about being the last ones standing, but it still might be unclear to many DVD Netflix renters where they can go to fill the void.

Ever since Samsung formally announced the $4,500 price tag of its highly anticipated 77-inch S95C 4K QD-OLED TV, we've been patiently waiting to hear how much the company's other 2023 OLED models will cost. Now we know that S90C will be its most affordable 2023 QD-OLED model at $1,900 for the 55-inch screen size. You can order them starting March 20 at most major Samsung retailers, except the 65-inch S90C, which is confirmed, but has yet to be released.

Samsung confirms ultrabright 77-inch QD-OLED panel for CES 2023. Will it be a TV?

Samsung Display has confirmed it will be showing a newly developed 77-inch variant of its QD-OLED panel technology at CES 2023. Whether Samsung Electronics will follow suit with an announcement about a 77-inch QD-OLED TV remains to be seen for now, but I expect to know more within the early days of the show. The new QD-OLED panel has been dubbed "QD-OLED 2023" and the company claims it can exceed 2,000 nits of brightness.

Samsung Display says the impressive new levels of brightness have been achieved through a combination of new panel design -- new "OLED HyperEfficient EL" material which improves the color brightness of each RGB -- and new optimization software dubbed IntelliSense AI.
