Sony’s First 50 GB Blu-ray Disc: ‘Click’

Well, it might only be a footnote in the history of the motion picture industry, but you’d think Sony would have wanted that footnote to reflect on it in a good way. Or, at least, not in a bad way.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced its first 50 GB Blu-ray movie title will go on sale Tuesday, October 10. Given all the gravitas Sony has attached to its high-definition Blu-ray format, and in light of the Blu-ray’s looming format war with Toshiba’s competing HD DVD format, you’d think Sony might want to take the high road and make its first 50 GB disk a respected film sure to appeal to film buffs, movie fans, and the sort of people who invest thousands of dollars in surround sound, wide-screen home theaters, and who are most likely to be early adopters of Blu-ray.

Nope. Sony’s first 50 GB Blu-ray disk is Adam Sandler’s Click. Adam Sandler plays an overworked guy who gets a magical remote control which lets him pause, mute, skip, scan, and rewind reality.

The future of Sony’s 50 GB Blu-ray title releases only gets a little less bleary, with Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down scheduled for released November 14, and Will Farrell’s Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby due for release December 12. Other studios backing Sony’s Blu-ray technology have announced 50 GB titles as well: Universal plans to ship historical actioner Kingdom of Heaven November 14, and Lionsgate plans to ship spelunking horror flick The Descent in December.

Where to rent DVDs and Blu-rays as Netflix ends disc rentals

After a formidable 25-year run, Netflix has announced that it will shutter its DVD-to-mail rental service, DVD Netflix, aka DVD.com. Citing the shrinking DVD business, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos told shareholders on April 18 that the rental service would be shipping its last DVD on September 29, 2023.
And while most of the 230 million Netflix subscribers won’t miss the service -- or perhaps even knew it still existed in the first place -- DVDs and Blu-rays are still a preferred method for watching movies and TV series if you really care about quality or just don't have broadband internet.
But now that DVD Netflix is out of the game, where can people turn to rent DVDs and Blu-rays?
Well, as the news hit Twitter, two of the best alternatives chimed in, reminding their followers that they, too, still existed. GameFly -- which primarily rents video games, but also has a selection of movies for rent -- tweeted at popular kiosk-rental company Redbox with a Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid gif and the text “Out here with @redbox like … .” The two services exchanged clever gifs and tweets (Redbox and Blockbuster even exchanged jabs) about being the last ones standing, but it still might be unclear to many DVD Netflix renters where they can go to fill the void.

KEF takes a swing at Bose, Sony, and Sennheiser with its first wireless ANC headphones

KEF, the British audio brand best known for its high-end speakers, has launched the Mu7, its first set of premium, wireless noise-canceling headphones. They're priced at $400 and come in two slightly different color tones: silver gray, and charcoal gray. For the moment, they're only available at KEF's website.

The Mu7 are very distinctive, with a design created by Ross Lovegrove, who collaborated with KEF on its first set of wireless earbuds, the Mu3. In fact, the Mu7 look like a scaled-up version of the Mu3, with a similar smooth-oval shape for the earcups and plenty of aluminum used throughout the headphones. The design mirrors other high-end wireless headphones with a fold-flat set of hinges, but KEF only includes a carry "pouch" instead of the nearly standard zippered carry case.

These are Sony’s first over-the-counter hearing aids

Sony has launched its first-ever hearing aids as over-the-counter (OTC) products that can be purchased by anyone, with or without a visit to an audiologist. You can pick from two different models -- the $1,000 CRE-C10, a traditional-looking hearing aid that is ultra-tiny and essentially invisible when worn, and the $1,300 CRE-E10, a model that looks a lot like a set of wireless earbuds, but smaller. The C10 will be available in October, while the E10 will be coming "this winter" according to Sony, but we don't know if that means before or after January 1, 2023.
