Scarface: 1 Million Hits and Counting

Sure, Epic Games’ Gears of War for Xbox 360 might have sold a million copies in two weeks…and Sierra Entertainment wasn’t going to bring it up because it might make other gams, you know, look bad, but they’re setting the record straight now. They’d just like people to know that its Scarface: The World Is Yours video sold more than one million copies in October across the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PSP platforms, according to the NPD Groups’ retail tracking report for Video Game Software Sales. During October, Scarface was the top title for PlayStation 2 and Xbox (lets remember the PS3 hadn’t shipped), the top console game in America, and the top game in America. In addition, the PSP title Scarface: Money. Power. Respect. was the top PSP game in America during the month.

“We are thrilled with the fantastic response to Scarface: The World Is Yours,” said Bill Kispert, VP Interactive, Universal Studios Consumer Product Group. “We know that the character, the mythos, and the brand of Scarface is one that fans are extremely passionate about. The teams at Sierra Entertainment and Radical Entertainment took that to heart—showing immense respect for both the nuances and the explosive elements of the source material, while also adding to the license’s mythology. This is a great example of how interactive entertainment can extend a franchise, and we love that fans feel the game has done Tony proud.”

And it’s probably a good thing the title has done well so far, considering what its development cost: the budget for the Scarface games reportedly rivalled that of a feature film, and the game got the full sound design and scoring treatment at Skywalker Sound.

Scarface: The World Is Yours gives players the opportunity to survive the famous “mansion shootout” from the 1983 film, then play as Tony Montana attempts to rebuild his empire and enact revenge on his enemies.

The fate of physical game discs seems to be set in stone, with an all-digital library becoming increasingly inevitable. Microsoft, though, may at least give Xbox owners a way to bring their shelves full of physical games along for the journey.

A leaked Microsoft roadmap sent to game publishers details the planned rollout of Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital program alongside a much larger backwards-compatibility push. The document reportedly targets August for general availability, October for the full launch of original Xbox games on PC, and a gradual Xbox 360 rollout beginning in 2027.

Gaming mice usually let you adjust sensitivity, polling rate, and button assignments through software. Pwnage’s new Vanta goes a step further by letting you physically change how each primary click feels.

The company describes the Vanta as the world’s first lightweight gaming mouse with mechanically adjustable clicks. Turning a pair of screws changes how much force and movement the left and right buttons require, without replacing the switches or adding more electronics.
