Verizon Takes Motorola Q to the Dark Side

Verizon Takes Motorola Q to the Dark Side

Verizon Wireless has introduced a black version of the Motorola Q smartphone (location info required), which the company loves to bill as the slimmest smartphone available in the United States. The Motorola Q’s svelte form factor (.45-inch thick!) caused a few waves when it hit the market earlier: running Windows Mobile 5, the Q sports a 1.3 megapixel camera, QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth wireless capabilities, 64 MB of user memory complemented by miniSD storage, stereo speakers, speakerphone capability, and a cute set of navigation keys and a thumb-based scroll wheel for navigating lists and documents. Naturally, as a Windows Mobile device, the Q offers Windows Media Player for your audio and video needs, as well as support for email, PDF, and Microsoft Office documents.

The black version is available for online ordering at the same apparent price as its silver forerunner—$199 with a two year service plan. But the black version only sports a $50 rebate (rather than the $100 payback on the silver edition), although it also comes with a carrying case rather than a belt holster. Expect the black Q to hit retailers in mid-January, although it’s available for online ordering now.

LG’s V50 ThinQ is a different take on the folding phone, and it supports 5G
The LG V50 ThinQ will be available from Verizon starting on June 20
LG V40 ThinQ Review

LG apparently couldn't help itself and decided to move up launch plans for its latest V-series flagship smartphone. Though V-series phones are typically released in the fall, the company has just announced the V50 ThinQ just five months after the LG V40 ThinQ released. It shares many of the same qualities with its very recent predecessor, but there's an unconventional addition that can turn it into a foldable phone, and the highlight is its ability to connect to 5G networks.

Didn't LG just launch another flagship smartphone? Yes, at MWC 2019, the company took the wraps off the LG G8 ThinQ, a follow-up to last year's LG G7 ThinQ. The new V50 carries a few of the same features as the new phone as well, and you can read more about the G-series phone in our full LG V50 review. But here's what the V50 ThinQ is all about.
5G!
The V50 ThinQ's marquee feature is the Qualcomm X50 modem inside the Snapdragon 855 processor, which means it can connect to 5G networks. That attribute is highlighted by the gaudy 5G logo on the back of the phone, which lights up in yellow (presumably because this phone will be launching on Sprint first).

The Honor Magic 6 RSR is my new favorite Android phone of 2024
Someone holding the Honor Magic 6 RSR outside.

There's no doubt that 2024 has already been an exciting year for Android phones. Samsung wowed us with the Galaxy S24 series at the beginning of the year, the OnePlus 12 and 12R are two of the best phones available right now, and Google is expected to impress later this month with the Google Pixel 8a.

But for the last few weeks, I haven't been thinking about any of those phones. Why? Because I've been using the Honor Magic 6 RSR. After launching in China this past March, the Magic 6 RSR is now available in the EU, and that's allowed more folks than ever to get their hands on the phone. And that's great, because the Honor Magic 6 RSR has quickly become my new favorite Android phone of 2024.
