Think those folks who play the World of Warcraft massively multiplayer online role-playing game until all hours of the morning are weird, sure, but not exactly threatening because, like, there can’t be that many of them? Think again: Blizzard Entertainment has announced that the World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade has set a new one-day sales record for a PC game in North America and Europe, having sold nearly 2.4 million copies in its first 24 hours of availability.

According to Blizzard, nearly 1.2 million units were sold in in North America, complemented by more than 1.1 million in Europe. The company says they supplied more than 4 million copies to retailers in time for launch, and more than 5,000 stores around the world opened their doors at midnight to slake the appetites of rabid World of Warcraft fans. By the end of the first day of availability, more than 1.7 million players had logged on and upgraded World of Warcraft to play The Burning Crusade.

“The Burning Crusade has already exceeded even our most ambitious expectations,” said Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’re pleased that so many players are eager to see all of the new content that the expansion has to offer, and we look forward to seeing everyone online as additional players continue to upgrade in the days ahead.”

The Burning Crusade is the first major expansion to the popular World of Warcraft online game; Blizzard says more than 8 million players around the world play World of Warcraft, with more than 2 million players in North America and 1.5 million players in Europe.

Xbox is celebrating 25 years by dressing your console in nostalgia
Xbox’s 25th birthday freebies are actually worth logging in for
Xbox 25th anniversary console

Xbox is nearing its quarter-century of oversized controllers, achievement hunting, and Halo nights. To celebrate its 25th birthday, Microsoft is letting players open a few birthday presents early. The company has released a free collection of gamerpics, profile backgrounds, themes, and a dynamic Xbox console background created by community artists Klobrille and Ben Kenobi.

The artwork is available now, ahead of the original Xbox’s 25th anniversary on November 15. Microsoft is also giving players a commemorative 25th anniversary profile badge. All you need to do is sign in to your Xbox account through a console, PC, or the Xbox mobile app before the end of 2026 to receive it.

A leaked internal memo suggests the next Xbox console, codenamed Project Helix, could play games from every generation the company has ever released. If true, that would make it the largest game library on any console, especially since it's also said to support PC games.

Xbox’s leaked roadmap could rescue your old games from the disc-drive grave
Book, Publication, Comics

The fate of physical game discs seems to be set in stone, with an all-digital library becoming increasingly inevitable. Microsoft, though, may at least give Xbox owners a way to bring their shelves full of physical games along for the journey.

A leaked Microsoft roadmap sent to game publishers details the planned rollout of Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital program alongside a much larger backwards-compatibility push. The document reportedly targets August for general availability, October for the full launch of original Xbox games on PC, and a gradual Xbox 360 rollout beginning in 2027.
