What’s happened? After introducing a Duolingo-like language practice feature earlier this year, Google Translate is now rolling out another useful change that makes it easy for users to pick between faster or more accurate translations.

  • Much like Gemini, the app now features a model picker that allows users to switch between two translation models: Fast and Advanced.
  • According to screenshots shared by 9to5Google, the Fast model is “Best for quick translations,” while the Advanced model offers “High accuracy for complex translations.”
  • Users can select their preferred model by tapping the pill-shaped button below the Google Translate logo at the top.

Why is this important? The ability to switch between translation models gives users more control over how they want to use Google Translate.

  • The feature should make it easier for users to pick precision over speed or vice versa.
  • Those looking to quickly translate text on the go can select the Fast model, while those seeking more accurate results can go with the Advanced model for better quality translations.

Why should I care? If you’ve ever found Google Translate to be too slow or slightly off the mark, this feature could give you better control over the trade-off between speed and accuracy.

  • The Fast model will help when you’re in a hurry, like quickly translating a sign while you’re on the road.
  • Meanwhile, the Advanced model will be great for more precise translations of work documents or emails.

What’s next? The model picker is currently live for some users in the Google Translate app for iOS. So far, it’s not available on Android, but that could change soon. It’s also worth noting that the Advanced model is limited to text translations in select languages.
