Tom Hanks’ love of typewriters is well known, so in many ways the only surprise about the launch of his Hanx Writer app is that it took so long to come about.

Landing in the iOS store last Friday, the iPad-only offering is now making itself comfortable at the top of the free-app chart, with older users enjoying a heavy dose of nostalgia while younger ones try to gain a better understanding of what all the clickety-clack-related fuss is about. DING!

Developed in partnership with tech-based creative agency Hitcents, Hanx Writer lets users enjoy the experience of bashing away on the keys of three of Hanks’ own vintage typewriters, though you’ll need to make an in-app purchase for two of them.

Thanks to a Twitter account with 8.7 million followers, the movie star has had little difficulty in getting the word out about his new app, with a stream of tweets in recent days helping to turn it into a chart topper.

“Launching now: The Hanx Writer. Make a typewriter out of your iPad. With a crisp typeface, bold style and best of all the sound of typing…” the actor tweeted last week.

Reveiws in the app store have so far been overwhelmingly positive, with one describing “the sound of virtual hammers hitting virtual paper along with the movement of the carriage” as “reassuringly old school and mesmerizing,” while another says, “This ain’t conceived by no Forest Gump I tells ye….Makes me want to be creative, makes me want to write….” – you get the picture.

There’s no doubt Hanks’ virtual typewriters look and sound great. And unlike the original mechanical machines, the app’s typewriters do include a delete key, though a neat touch is the ability to ‘go traditional’ and use it to type “x” over your mistakes. It looks a total mess but it’s certainly more authentic.

Speaking to USA Today recently, Hanks said his app was “for people searching for a more personalized experience when writing on an iPad,” before adding, “There’s also the opportunity here to take your iPad to a coffee house and be really obnoxious with all the clickety-clacking.”

Apple is already past its usual upgrade cycle for the iPad Pro after the previous model was released in October 2022. Latest reports hint at an announcement now set for "early May" this year where Apple will unveil the new iPad Pro and iPad Air models, even though a proper event seems unlikely. Despite Apple's suggested lack of fervor, these purported new iPad models are expected to bring significant changes, especially to the display.

Apple iPad 9th Gen (Wi-Fi, 64GB) -- $250, was $330

The ninth-generation Apple iPad was released in 2021, but it maintains a spot in our list of the best iPads as the best iPad on a budget. It's still a very reliable and solid choice if you want an Apple tablet, with a 10.2-inch Retina display that's bright and beautiful, and smooth performance despite the relatively old A13 Bionic chip that was introduced in the iPhone 11 because it can be upgraded to the latest iPadOS 17. The device also features an 8MP Wide back camera, a 12MP Ultra Wide front camera with Center Stage technology, the Touch ID fingerprint recognition system for security, and battery life of up to 10 hours on a single charge.

How to set up a VPN on an iPhone or iPad
iPhone 15 Pro Max showing the YouTube Music app.

Introducing a virtual private network (VPN) to your everyday web browsing is a smart move for a few reasons. For starters, it’s a great way to safeguard your user data when you’re surfing the internet. Because VPNs switch you to a different network and IP address, they’re terrific for accessing region-specific content. Have you been wanting to watch a series or two that’s only available for streaming in certain countries? A VPN will let you watch these movies and shows! And one of the best parts of the VPN experience is it’s not just limited to your PC.

In fact, you’ll even be able to use one on your iPhone. Back when iOS 15 rolled out, Apple also introduced a feature called Private Relay, which can be used alongside a VPN for an even bigger boost in web security.
