JVC’s first 4K/UHD TV on its way to store shelves

Like virtually everyone else in the business, JVC is eager to make the move to 4K TV technology, and will soon do so with its new 65-inch DM65USR 4K/UHD LED TV, priced at a cool $2,000. While the brand’s freshman effort was first announced back in June, JVC reportedly announced this week that its new 4K jewel is about to go on display in stores around the US.

Reported by Twice, JVC’s new DM65USR is slated for availability before the end of September, just barely ahead of its original October release date. Marquee features for the new set include 5 HDMI ports, 4 of which comply with the new HDMI 2.0 standard that allows 4K frame rates up to 60fps, direct LED backlights with local dimming for rich black levels and high contrast, as well as JVC’s CrystalColor XD circuitry.

Other features include JVC’s XinemaSound system with a proprietary suite of DSP for advanced sound performance, as well as a double-sided remote with a full QWERTY keyboard.

Conspicuously absent, however, is any mention of HEVC (aka H.265) support, which is the latest codec for streaming 4K content used by sites like Netflix. In fact, JVC makes no mention of a dedicated smart engine or Wi-Fi at all, which are generally considered standard for TVs of this caliber.

That may mean that the new TV is relegated to hardwired source material, at least when it comes to 4K content. In comparison, Vizio’s new 4K sets are loaded with all the 4K streaming trimmings, including Netflix, Amazon’s forthcoming 4K content pool, and the recently-announced UltraFlix, with similar specs and pricing.

According to Twice, JVC has also announced 55-inch and 85-inch versions of the new TVs will be coming as well, and are slated make their way to stores in the coming weeks.

It should be noted that these TVs are not made by the JVC that earned such a solid reputation over the past couple of decades, but by the Taiwan company JVC sold its TV division to in 2011, AmTran. We’ll have to see how these TV’s stack up against top-tier competitors in the coming days.
