Swords are out in first trailer for Netflix’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny - Trailer - Netflix [HD]
Over the past several months, there’s been much hullabaloo about Netflix’s upcoming Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel. The biggest commotion came when the company announced plans to release the film on its streaming service and in theaters on the same day, causing many movie theaters to decide to boycott the film. In spite of the outcry, the release is moving forward as planned, and the streamer released the first trailer for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny today.

Based on what’s shown in the trailer, the sequel will feature gravity-defying fight scenes and breathtaking scenery, just as fans of the original film would expect (and want). Although nothing we’ve seen so far surpasses the bamboo treetop battles of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, there are creative combat locations in Sword of Destiny too. The preview shows fights taking place in settings that only add to the danger — from what appears to be a slippery frozen body of water to a rooftop.

Sword of Destiny again stars Michelle Yeoh as Yu Shu Lien. The female warrior is tasked with protecting the Green Destiny sword from an evil warlord, and while the trailer doesn’t reveal just who the man after the legendary weapon is, it’s clear that he’s a serious threat. “Once he has the sword, that will be the end of all of us,” says Shu Lien.

The film also stars Donnie Yen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Harry Shum Jr. (Glee), both of whom appear in the preview. Sword of Destiny is directed by Yuen Woo-ping, who is known for his work on martial arts films.

Netflix tweeted out the trailer, sharing that “trouble is on the way.”

Crouching Tiger, Hidden DragonSword of Destiny comes to select Imax theaters and Netflix on February 26.
