Speck announces collapsible Pocket VR viewer

Add as a preferred source on Google

If you’ve been tempted to dip a toe in the waters of the new virtual reality trend, then you’ll find an ever-widening range of headsets awaits you. The latest, Pocket VR, was just unveiled at CES 2016 in Vegas, and it comes from an unlikely source in the shape of popular case manufacturer, Speck.

The Pocket VR viewer is designed work with Apple’s iPhone 6 or 6S, or Samsung’s Galaxy S6, and it can be folded flat, making it a highly portable option. It comes with Speck’s popular CandyShell Grip case, which offers military-grade drop protection in a stylish package.

It folds open to reveal two precision-crafted lenses, which serve as your window to some virtual and augmented reality fun. The edges of the Pocket VR clip neatly onto the ends of the CandyShell Grip case. When it comes time to put it away, you’ll find that the lenses are well-protected from scratches or dust as they slide neatly behind two panels, and you can fold the headset completely flat to slip it into your pocket or bag.

You’ll be glad to know that the Pocket VR is Google Cardboard-certified, so it will work with a number of the virtual reality apps and games that are already available via the App Store and the Play Store. Speck has also partnered with Jaunt to create a unique custom viewing experience for CES.

We’ve seen a lot of different VR viewers in the last year that offer a more comfortable VR experience than the foldable cardboard design, but this is the first one we’ve seen that focusses on portability. Folded flat, the Pocket VR has a similar profile to your phone, and that’s its major selling point.

The Pocket VR with CandyShell Grip will cost $70 as a bundled package when it goes on sale this spring.

Amazon Alexa for Shopping being used to create lists

The Holiday season is upon us, and Amazon is making its AI shopping assistant a lot more useful ahead of major shopping events like Black Friday. The company has announced over 100 new Alexa for Shopping capabilities, letting customers manage subscriptions, create gift lists, change delivery instructions, and ask billing questions simply by asking. The new features are already available to Amazon customers in the US.

Alexa for Shopping could already help you find products, compare prices, and track discounts. Now, Amazon is making it useful for some of the less exciting parts of online shopping, which I think is where an AI assistant could come in handy.

Doordash and Instacart ona laptop.

DoorDash has announced that it is acquiring grocery giant Instacart at an equity valuation of $17 billion, in a cash-and-stock deal. Subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals, the deal is expected to close by the end of 2027 or in the first half of 2028. DoorDash claims that, thanks to the deal, customers will have the flexibility to buy daily essentials from more stores, which also increases their chances of getting bargain deals and faster deliveries.

“The combined company will offer grocers and retailers of every size DoorDash’s delivery network and Instacart’s grocery and fulfillment technology, in both apps and on stores’ own websites, along with the advertising and AI tools each company has built,” the company said in a press statement. For an average customer, there are a couple of tangible benefits emerging from this multi-billion dollar deal.
