Lawbreakers drops free-to-play pricing, adds new, “mature” art style

Boss Key Productions chief Cliff Bleszinski announced a series of structural and aesthetic changes to the studio’s debut title, Lawbreakers, during its panel at the Games Developers Conference on Thursday. During the presentation, titled “Surrounded by 800lb. Gorillas! Standing Up to the Competition,” Bleszinski said that the first-person shooter — originally designed to be free-to-play — would now launch at a sub-$60 price point and would be available exclusively through Steam.

“As the game continued to take shape, we realized free-to-play wasn’t the right fit for what we’re building,” Bleszinski said. “LawBreakers is a competitive game at heart and that means balance is a big priority to me, my team, and our community. Using a digital premium model helps ensure an even playing field by giving fans access to every available role without any barriers.”

According to Polygon, Bleszinski said aspects of the free-to-play model, such as creating large numbers of characters to monetize, did not reflect the Lawbreakers team’s design philosophy. He also noted that “a lot of core gamers” still distrust free-to-play games “because they think they’ll get ripped off.”

Bleszinski also revealed that the game’s art style has received an overhaul since the game was initially announced last year. The new aesthetic has been described as less colorful, and more “mature.” Blezinski said that these changes were implemented to make the game stand out in an increasingly crowded class-based FPS space. According to Steam, the game will launch this summer, likely within a few months of two high-profile MOBA-inspired shooters, Gearbox Software’s Battleborn and Blizzard’s Overwatch.

“Being constantly compared to the current slew of colorful shooters on the market made us realize we needed to stand out from the crowd” Bleszinski said. “We decided to take a step back and explore how we could dial up the maturity in LawBreakers, going back to our original vision. The new look and feel embraces the innovative and vertical nature of our game elevated by violence, intensity and competition.”

Lawbreakers is on track to launch on PC in Summer, 2016: Steam users can now add it to their Steam wishlists. Boss Key Productions teased a possible pre-release beta, announcing it would hold “number of upcoming tests before launch” in a press-release following Bleszinski’s talk.

Cinder City wants 64GB of RAM, and the rest of its PC specs make it even weirder
Remember when 16GB RAM was enough?
Cinder City Gameplay screenshot

For years, PC gamers have joked that game developers treat hardware requirements like a shopping list. Cinder City might have just taken that joke a little too seriously. The game's newly listed recommended PC specs ask for a whopping 64GB of RAM. That's a figure that's raising eyebrows because almost everything else on the list looks surprisingly… normal.

64GB RAM paired with an RTX 4060?

Xbox might let you digitize your game discs, and the timing makes perfect sense
Sony gave disc owners no lifeline. Microsoft's Disc2Digital would be exactly that.
Book, Publication, Comics

Earlier today, Sony announced it will stop making physical game discs for new PlayStation titles starting in January 2028. It looks like Microsoft is heading in the same direction, but with a consumer-friendly approach: Xbox owners may not have to leave their disc collections behind.

According to The Verge's Tom Warren, Microsoft has been quietly working on a disc-to-digital feature for Xbox. It's called Disc2Digital internally, and lets players convert their physical games into permanent digital licenses.

Sony is shutting down the PS3 and PS Vita stores after a very long run
PS3 and PS Vita stores will stop selling new digital content by July 2027
PlayStation 3.

Sony is closing the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita, ending new digital purchases on two of its most beloved older platforms after a remarkably long run.

The PS3 launched in 2006 and 2007, depending on the region, while the PS Vita arrived in Japan in late 2011 before reaching North America and Europe in February 2012. By the time the final closures happen in July 2027, Sony will have supported PS3 store purchases for nearly two decades, and PS Vita purchases for more than 15 years.
