Netflix orders ’80s wrestling comedy ‘GLOW’ from ‘OITNB’ creator Jenji Kohan

Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan has already brought the big house to Netflix users, and soon she’ll be partially responsible for a lot of big hair. Netflix has ordered a comedy series with Kohan serving as executive producer, reports Deadline. Set in the ’80s, the show centers on the real-life female wrestling league that was featured in the series GLOW: Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.

The Las Vegas-based series ran for four seasons and even had sketches and songs to go with its wrestling. As seen in the clip above, the league was full of distinct characters, colorful costumes, over-the-top humor, and, of course, ’80s flavor. Needless to say, there’s a lot of entertaining inspiration to be found in the show and brought to Netflix’s GLOW.

The upcoming Netflix original will be set in Los Angeles and follow a fictionalized character who is a struggling actress trying to realize her acting dreams. To do so, she joins a live series about women’s wrestling, likely in bright spandex and with her hair teased beyond belief. It is a premise that definitely has potential and a story that won’t take itself too seriously.

With Orange Is the New Black proving successful for Netflix, it is no surprise that the streamer would want more projects that involve the show’s creator. Kohan will team up with OITNB co-executive producer Tara Herrmann on GLOW, as well as its creators, Liz Flahive (Homeland) and Carly Mensch (Orange Is the New Black). The series has a 10-episode order.

At this point, no casting information has been announced nor has a timeline been revealed. We will have to be patient until GLOW enters the ring, but hopefully, it will be worth the wait.

Three astronauts look out of their space ship in Apollo 13.

Does sex still sell at the multiplex? We'll find out this weekend when Challengers, a steamy new drama starring Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist, premieres in theaters nationwide. The movie's proven to be a hit with critics so far, so maybe some moviegoers will be in the mood to watch a love triangle set on the tennis courts in New Rochelle, New York.

For those who prefer to stay at home for their entertainment, Netflix is usually the go-to option for almost every genre imaginable. This weekend, we've queued up three movies worthy of your time and attention. One is a new 2024 thriller about an interview gone wrong, and the others are two 1995 movies that still hold up after nearly three decades.

The best sci-fi movies on Max right now
Christian Bale in Terminator Salvation.

There were only two notable sci-fi additions to Max in April: Terminator Salvation and Source Code. Both are very good movies, but it's been clear for months that Max is coasting on its sci-fi lineup. It's not enough to just have great films to watch, especially if they're on loan from other studios with an expiration date at some point in the future. Once films like Alien, Avatar, and all of the classic Star Trek films leave, Max's sci-fi library is going to look pretty weak.

For now, we're just going to have to live with the available selection for the best sci-fi movies on Max. But we also added Escape From L.A. just to give you more than two options that weren't on this list last month. If you want to see the rest of the films, just keep scrolling down.

3 Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (April 26-28)
Luke Kirby and Michelle Williams in Take This Waltz.

As you've probably noticed, this is the last weekend of April. That means Hulu is about to lose some of its best movies before the new titles arrive May 1. And while we've already shared five great movies leaving Hulu at the end of April, those aren't the only terrific titles going out the door.

That's why this week's picks for the three Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend are off the beaten path from the films we've previously chosen for April. We've picked out a historical drama, a romantic dramedy, and a remix of a classic Charles Dickens story. But since these movies are only around until April 30, you should catch these flicks before they go off to some other streamer.
