Google’s next Googlebook could make your Android tablets feel outdated

Googlebooks are moving beyond traditional laptops, and the next one might look more like a tablet.

Googlebooks have only been around for a little over a month, but Google is already looking beyond traditional laptops. The company has confirmed that detachable Googlebooks are on the way, meaning we could soon see devices that work as both a tablet and a laptop without carrying two separate gadgets.

The announcement came during the Android Dev Summit 2026, where Google outlined its plans to expand the Googlebook lineup beyond the clamshell and convertible designs currently available. While the company hasn’t revealed an official launch date or shown any hardware, an earlier leak suggests Lenovo could be the first manufacturer to bring one to market.

Googlebooks are finally breaking away from the laptop design

Google launched its first five Googlebooks with a fairly familiar approach. Four of them, from Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, are conventional laptops. The Acer Googlebook 14 is the only exception, offering a 360-degree hinge that lets you fold the screen backward and use it as a tablet. However, there’s a big difference between folding a laptop into tablet mode and actually removing its keyboard. That’s where Google’s next wave of devices comes in.

Interestingly, Lenovo might already have something in the works. An Android Headlines leak pointed to a Googlebook tablet with a detachable keyboard and a built-in kickstand, much like Microsoft’s Surface devices. The leaked hardware also reportedly features Google’s Glowbar near the camera, although its exact functionality remains unclear. We still don’t know much, including the specifications, pricing, and whether Lenovo will actually be first to launch. But Google’s latest confirmation makes it clear that detachable devices are officially part of its plans.

Could Googlebook OS become the future of Android tablets?

The bigger story here is what Google’s expansion could mean for Android tablets. Googlebook OS is built on Android, but it’s designed to offer a more desktop-like computing experience. Bringing it to detachable tablets could give users a device that’s comfortable for watching videos and browsing the web, while still handling more demanding productivity tasks.

That said, Google still has some work to do. The current software allows fullscreen apps to run in portrait orientation, but important parts of the interface, including the home screen, app drawer, and Overview, remain restricted to landscape mode. That’s hardly ideal for a device designed to be used without a keyboard. It also raises an interesting question about Google’s long-term tablet strategy. If Googlebook OS eventually offers a better desktop experience, where does that leave premium tablets running regular Android? With detachables officially on the roadmap, the line between Android tablets and Googlebooks is about to get a lot thinner.

Apple issues a grim warning as memory costs soar. It seems pricey iPhones and Macs are here to stay
Apple’s memory bill is climbing, and your receipt may follow.
MacBook Pro PROLED XDR laptop

Whether it’s iPhones, iPads, or MacBooks, Apple has already slapped revised price tags on a long list of products. Since these products already cost hundreds of dollars more than they did (especially MacBooks and the Mac mini, which use highly capable M-series chips), I was quietly hoping this was it.

However, during its recent earnings call, Apple ended that hope. The company has warned that memory chip prices are climbing at an “unprecedented” pace, with CEO John Ternus telling investors that costs will be even higher in the December quarter (via The Guardian).

An AI pet portrait maker or workout app that looks harmless could be hiding nudifying tools. According to a Wired investigation, hundreds of apps on Google's Play Store and Apple's App Store were found disguising themselves as pet photo editor, language tutor, workout coaches and other mundane apps.

Under the right conditions, those ordinary-looking apps quietly switched over to a hidden interface that generated sexually abusive deepfakes. Researchers from AI Forensics uncovered the network, which includes 400+ connected apps and domains.
