Intel Buys NetEffect

Times might be tough, but Intel is still splashing out, spending $8 million to acquire Texas-based networking specialist NetEffect. Intel will get all the assets and intellectual property, but NetEffect will keep operating out of its current Austin HQ and keep all its staff.

So what’s in it for Intel? They get products that lets servers link with 1 Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections as well as the iWARP Ethernet system, and Infiniband alternative.

Tom Swinford, general manager, Intel LAN Access Division, said:

"NetEffect’s role as a data communications solution provider and the company’s technology will enhance Intel’s current Ethernet efforts. The combination of Intel and NetEffect technology will allow Intel to address our customers’ most important 10 Gigabit Ethernet needs, including server virtualization, convergence of network and storage traffic, and server compute clusters."

Don’t buy the RTX 3060 in 2024

Nvidia's RTX 3060 is the most popular GPU around, and it's not even close. According to the latest Steam hardware survey, the 2021 GPU is in close to 7% of gaming PCs. That's a huge slice of the pie. For reference, the second most popular GPU, the RTX 2060, sits at just under 4%. It's easy to see why the GPU is popular, too. It's the go-to GPU for maxed-out 1080p gaming in 2024, but based on my testing, it probably shouldn't be. The RTX 3060 is a workhorse, and for a large range of games, it's one of the best graphics cards you can buy. When it comes to the latest, most demanding games, however, the RTX 3060 struggles to keep up.
