DVD Developers Get Ready For Format Battle

CNN has a good article talking about how the two formats will compete with the loser potentially losing blowing millions in research and development.

“Two rival “next generation” DVD formats look set to be launched onto the marketplace next year.

Both are backed by powerful and well-known Japanese manufacturers, with each staking their claim to an industry worth billions of dollars.

And with the DVD market unlikely to support parallel formats, the loser faces the prospect of squandering millions spent on research, development and marketing costs.”

While Blu-ray based recorders are already on sale in Japan and being sold under the Sharp and Sony brand, Toshiba is hoping to release their HD DVD players by early 2005.

Get ready for a new generation of wireless headphones: Bluetooth LE Audio is now a done deal

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) -- the entity tasked with evolving the Bluetooth wireless standard over time -- has announced that it has completed its work on the new LE Audio specification, which officially opens the doors to a new wave of wireless headphones, earbuds, speakers, and hearing aids that work with the new standard.

Bluetooth LE Audio is fully backward-compatible with older Bluetooth versions, so you don't need to worry about buying a new set of earbuds or headphones only to discover that they don't work with your phone or computer. But it does add several new capabilities like Auracast (a broadcast-style audio sharing feature) and the LC3 codec, which promises better audio quality while reducing latency and extending battery life. To enjoy these additional features, both the transmitting device (like your phone) and the receiving device (headphones, earbuds, etc.) will need to support them.

Get ready to pay more for Hulu on October 8, 2021

You're going to have to pay a little more for two of Hulu's most popular plans starting October 8, 2021. The most basic Hulu plan, which includes advertising on its on-demand content, will increase from $6 a month to $7 a month, or $60 to $70 if you pay annually. And if you want to get rid of most of the advertising, you'll see that price go from $12 a month to $13 a month.

That's not the largest of increases by any stretch of the imagination, but it's also not nothing. The increase for the basic Hulu plan is about 17%, getting Hulu without advertising is only going up about 8%.
