Electronics giant Motorola has made another aquisition designed to strengthen the company’s portfolio of digital video and IPTV-related technologies, this time snapping up the privately-held Modulus Video for an undisclosed amount. Modulus Video develops MPEG-4 video encoding and compression systems designed for use in broadcast, satellite, cable, and IPTV systems.
“Motorola is committed to offering an integrated, end-to-end video portfolio designed to meet the current and next-generation requirements of operators,” said Dan Moloney, president of Motorola’s Home and Networks Mobility business, in a statement. “As consumers demand more high definition video and interactive services, the need for advanced compression technology is increasingly important.”
Motorola expects the deal to close by the end of the third quarter of 2007, at which point Modulus will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Motorola.
The acquisition is the latest in several buys Motorola has been making to strengthen its IPTV and digital video technology portfolio and product line as it positions itself as a key technology player in what it anticipates as a boom in IPTV and Internet-delivered video-on-demand. Last month, Motorola acquired Terayon Communications Systems; previously, Motorola bought up Netopia, Tut Systems, and Broadbus, all of which are involved in the design and development of broadband systems and video distribution.
