Sony’s Xperia Tablet Z isn’t selling? Stick a meat thermometer in it!

You know how it is, you’re preparing a meal in the kitchen using an online recipe, and the screen on your tablet ends up covered in the same ingredients which went into the pot. Getting them all off can be annoying, as rarely can you just stick it under the tap. Sony feels your pain and has come up with a solution, the Xperia Tablet Z: Kitchen Edition.

We already like the Xperia Tablet Z, a strong performer wrapped up in a super sleek body, and this spin-off makes a lot of sense, thanks to one of its key features. The Tablet Z is waterproof, so no matter how much it goes against your instincts, it’ll happily survive a dunking to remove all the grime. Close all the ports, and Sony says it’ll be fine at a depth of three feet and a duration of 30 minutes. More than enough to remove all traces of spilt milk. Also, Sony has beefed (sorry) up the Kitchen Edition’s chassis by reinforcing the rear panel with carbon fiber.

Included with the Kitchen Edition is an iGrill Bluetooth thermometer specially designed to measure the temperature of meat, which it relays back to an app installed on the tablet. It’ll even send through a notification when the specified temperature has been reached, and it’s effective at up to 200 feet. To make sure the tablet is always at the right angle, a foldable stand is also included.

Finally, Sony has installed a wide range of applications suited to the keen chef, ranging from Big Oven, Evernote Food, Out of Milk (a handy shopping list maker), and Food Planner Pro, to a selection of 260 international recipes complete with how-to video guides.

Otherwise, Sony’s tablet is identical to the non-kitchen approved model, meaning it has a 10.1-inch screen with a 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution, a quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB of RAM, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. If all this sounds exactly what you’ve been looking for to help your cooking exploits, Sony will sell you the white 32GB tablet for $650, and it should be available very soon through Sony’s own Web store.

The announcement of the Xperia Tablet Z: Kitchen Edition comes just a few days after the U.S. release of the 4G LTE model.

The Narwal Freo X Plus is an entry-level robot vacuum loaded with premium features
The Freo X Plus vacuuming pet hair.

Narwal launched the Freo X Ultra earlier this year, and we found it to be an exceptional robot vacuum and mop combo -- though its $1,400 price tag made it a luxury item for most shoppers. Thankfully, many of the Freo X Ultra's best features can be found on the newly launched Narwal Freo X Plus, which offers an affordable alternative to the flagship vacuum and mop combo.

The Freo X Plus should be much more appealing to frugal shoppers, as it clocks in at just $400. That's a full $1,000 cheaper than the Ultra, yet it still holds up to seven weeks of dust, can lift its mopping plate when traveling on carpet, and produces up to 7,800 Pa of suction to pull out dirt and debris from your carpets. It can even apply 6 Newton units of downward pressure while mopping, allowing it to tackle tough stains with ease.
