Origin PC’s new laptop is super thin, impossibly light, and totally VR-ready

Thinking of taking your gaming on the go? Origin PC has a new laptop that just might fit the bill. Built with top-of-the-line components and an impressively thin construction, the newly announced Origin EVO-15S is virtual reality-ready and competitively priced.

The 15-inch system features a 1,920 x 1,080 IPS panel, which sneaks into a chassis that’s just .69 inches thick when closed. The system also weighs just 3.96 pounds as configured, which puts it into competition weight-wise with 15-inch laptops that are not intended for gaming. While Origin recently moved to custom enclosures for its desktop systems, we have not seen the same trend on the laptops, which tend to share a chassis with other custom gaming manufacturers.

There is nothing too surprising under the hood. The system is powered by an Intel Core i7-6700HQ, a Skylake chip instead of the more recent Kaby Lake CPUs slowly making their way into laptops. It is paired up with 16GB of 2,400MHz DDR4 memory in a dual-channel kit, which likely limits your ability to upgrade it later.

For storage, Origin includes both a 256GB PCIe-equipped SSD for operating system and games, with a 2TB mechanical drive for extra storage, should you need it.

The star of the show is the GTX 1060 that powers the graphical pursuits. While we have not done any formal comparisons between the desktop and mobile cards, we did find the GTX 1070 performed incredibly well, even compared to the previous generation’s mobile GTX 980.

Origin says the new EVO-15S will start at $2,083, although it is not clear whether the specifications listed above are the base model. There are also a slew of custom etching and paint job options, which may escalate the price further without improving on performance.

Whichever configuration you land on, Origin will back you up with lifetime technical support, a trademark of high-end custom gaming PC brands. The EVO-15S should be available from Origin PC’s landing page.

The best VR-ready laptops you can buy right now
oculus quest hand tracking hands on review cameras vr 2

While VR headsets need a fairly robust GPU to operate properly, you’re not completely bound to a desktop computer. With the right laptop, you can run VR just fine, making it easier to find the perfect VR setup around your home or on the go.

Virtual headsets like the Vive Cosmos or the Rift S have their own recommendations for how much computing and GPU power you need. And while this is a good starting point, it doesn’t really give you an idea of what laptops can really run VR well.

2 Gigabit Verizon Fios connection -- $85 per month + free extras
One of the fastest internet speeds you can get, and the fastest speed that Verizon offers, this is the sort of subscription you should grab if all the members of your family are essentially watching 4k content all the time. It's also great for those who want to host their own media server to share with friends or family while not impacting anybody else in the home. You also get a lot of great freebies included here, such as the choice of either a $300 Target gift card or a $350 value Samsung Chromebook Go, which is admittedly an entry-level device, but it's not bad to use for just streaming content. On top of that, you can choose between 2TB of Verizon cloud storage and 12 months of Disney+ with no ads or a MoCA Ethernet Adapter for gaming and a $50 Xbox eGift Card. You could also get both of these if you add an extra $10/month, although it's probably not worth it at that point.

1 Gigabit Verizon Fios connection -- $65 per month + free extras
If the super-fast speeds aren't necessarily needed, especially if you're in a smaller household without too many folks watching content, then the 1 Gigabit version is the way to go. It is $20 cheaper, so it's a lot of money that you're saving over the course of the year, and you still get quite a few extra benefits, even at this level. You get to choose either a $200 Target gift card or the same sort of Samsung Chromebook Go that's worth $350 that's great for streaming content. You also get a similar choice as the 2 Gigabit connection, which includes either 2TB of Verizon cloud storage and six months of Disney+ without ads, or a MoCA Ethernet Adapter for gaming and a $50 Xbox eGift Card.
