‘Stardew Valley’ hits PS4 and Xbox One in December, Nintendo Switch port planned

Citing issues surrounding “the current gaming landscape,” developer ConcernedApe opted to shelve Stardew Valley‘s Wii U version in favor of an upcoming port for Nintendo’s successor console, the Nintendo Switch.

Released for PC platforms via Steam earlier in 2016, Stardew Valley is an overhead-view simulation game in which players attempt to restore a rustic farm to its former glory. Throughout the course of Stardew Valley‘s lengthy campaign, players raise crops, tend livestock, and manufacture products in order to turn a profit. Romance also plays a significant role in Stardew Valley‘s gameplay, and as the storyline progresses, players eventually pair up with one of several potential suitors.

Stardew Valley remained a PC exclusive since it launched in February, but December will mark its long-awaited console debut. A PS4 version will launch digitally on December 13, while an Xbox One port will be available via the Xbox Marketplace on December 14.

“Stardew Valley will not be coming to the Wii U,” creator Eric Barone revealed via the game’s official blog this week. “Looking at Wii U and the current gaming landscape, we made the difficult choice to shift our development efforts to creating a version for Nintendo Switch.”

Barone continued: “I am really looking forward to the Switch, and I believe that the Switch’s unique capabilities could create some exciting opportunities for Stardew Valley. I do want to emphasize that I am absolutely committed to seeing Stardew Valley on Nintendo platforms, and I really do appreciate your support and understanding in this.”

A release date for the Nintendo Switch version of Stardew Valley is not yet known.

Today's ID@Xbox stream was packed with indie games galore, but the highlight of the show came from Stardew Valley developer Concerned Ape. During an interview on the stream, Eric Barone, the sole developer of Stardew Valley announced that the game will be coming to Xbox Game Pass.

Stardew Valley was originally released in February 2016 but has since exploded in popularity. The game, heavily inspired by the Harvest Moon franchise, gives players a farm to call their own, and a small town to live in. The game is currently available on PC, Switch, PlayStation consoles, and Xbox consoles, and will arrive on Xbox Game Pass later this fall. A concrete release date for the game on Xbox's subscription service was not announced.
