The most common Google Hangouts problems and how to fix them

Add as a preferred source on Google

Google has recently started shutting down the main functions of its Hangouts service, namely its messaging and voice calling features. If you’ve recently noticed that these features are no longer available to you or are limited in Hangouts, here’s what you need to know about how to transition from Hangouts to other communication services that will still allow you to stay in contact with your friends and family.

I can’t make calls at all

Google recently shut down the Google Voice integration that made voice calling in Hangouts possible, which means you can’t place phone calls from Hangouts anymore. At this time, you’ll need to set up and use a Google Voice account to make phone calls. If you’ve never used a Google Voice account before, check out our guide on how to set up a Voice account on your smartphone.

When you set up your new Voice account (or choose to use an existing one), you should bear in mind the following: Past messages from Hangouts should still appear in Voice, and you should be able to use your Voice number for voicemails, texts, and calls (including domestic and international calls made either via your mobile device or web browser). If desired, Google says you can export your Hangouts data until July 2021.

You can access Voice via a mobile app (iOS or Android) or a web app.

Along with the shutdown of voice calling in Hangouts, messaging has also been affected by Google’s recent changes to the platform. While you may still be able to send chat messages to other Google accounts via Hangouts — we tested this in April 2021, and for now, chatting with other Google accounts appears to still work in Hangouts — text messaging from Hangouts is a different story, and like voice calling, you’ll now need Google Voice to send a text message.

Eventually, however, Hangout’s remaining chat messaging functionality may also be on the chopping block in the future. According to 9to5Google, Google has already begun rolling out a preview version of Google Chat, a messaging app that appears to be a replacement for Hangouts messaging.

If you’d rather just go ahead and start using Google Chat instead, you can use it via the web or its mobile apps (iOS or Android).

Alternative messaging and calling services

It’s possible that after all of the changes Hangouts is undergoing, you may just want to use a completely different service altogether for your messaging and calling needs. Here are a few of our guides to help you get started with using other services:

Windows 11 is getting a new Screen Tint mode, and your eyes might thank Microsoft
Users can apply custom color overlays to reduce screen intensity and visual fatigue.
Windows 11 on a laptop

Microsoft is testing a new accessibility feature for Windows 11 called Screen Tint, and it could be one of those small additions that make a surprisingly big difference. Instead of changing your display's color temperature like Night Light, Screen Tint applies a customizable color overlay across the entire screen, making bright displays easier on the eyes during long work or gaming sessions.

Apple’s looking at a politically radioactive fix for the memory crisis, and the US government isn’t happy about it
Apple blamed memory costs for your price hike. Its proposed solution involves a Pentagon blacklist.
Apple Mac Mini on a Desk

A few days ago, Apple announced an ugly mid-cycle price hike, blaming the worsening-by-the-day memory crisis. According to the Financial Times, the company is now lobbying the government for approval to buy memory chips from a Chinese company.

The company in question is CXMT, a Chinese chipmaker that the Pentagon added to its Chinese Military Company blacklist for alleged ties to the Chinese army.

As iPads get pricier, Motorola’s Pad 70 Pro arrives as a solid option… just not for US buyers yet
Great specs, a stylus in the box, and no US launch date: the Moto Pad 70 Pro sounds both impressive and disappointing.
Computer, Electronics, Laptop

If you don’t know about Apple’s recent price hike, which affected all the products in its lineup except the iPhone and Apple Watch (for now), you’ve got to be living under some sort of a rock. The revision made all the iPads much more expensive.

Motorola, however, has just launched a 13-inch tablet that actually sounds good on paper. It’s called the Moto Pad 70 Pro, and it costs around $440 for the baseline model. The catch, however, is that the device isn’t available in the US yet.
