Fall Guys shoots up Steam, Twitch popularity rankings despite server issues

Free-for-all multiplayer game Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout continues its early success on Steam and Twitch despite server issues caused by massive player counts.

The Fall Guys launch was marred with overloaded servers, resulting in review-bombing on Steam that was reversed by players in a show of support for the game. Developer Mediatonic, through the game’s official Twitter account, said that Fall Guys had more than 1.5 million players in its first 24 hours, and that it was working on a patch to fix bugs and connection issues.

The launch issues, however, continued, with a notice on Fall Guys’ Steam page that reads, “We underestimated the number of jellybeans in the jar. We’re working hard to increase server capacity but please be aware that matchmaking may be up and down during the launch window.”

Mediatonic also issued an apology for the persistent problems.

We're super grateful for your patience, and we can't thank you enough for supporting us through these launch issues.

Once everything is back online, we'll be working on extra rewards for you all to show our appreciation. 🙌

We will post news here as soon as its available!

Apparently, these issues were not enough to drive players away from Fall Guys though.

For August 8, as of the time of writing, Fall Guys has reached a peak player count on Steam of 124,772 players, behind only mainstays Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, DOTA 2, and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The game, meanwhile, has leapfrogged Grand Theft Auto V and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege.

Meanwhile, on Twitch, Fall Guys is the second-most viewed game with 244,000 viewers, coming in behind League of Legends but beating the likes of Grand Theft Auto V, Fortnite, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Fall Guys launches on PlayStation Plus

The early success of Fall Guys was helped by the game’s PlayStation 4 launch as a free-to-download game for PlayStation Plus subscribers, similar to the 2015 release of Psyonix’s vehicular soccer game Rocket League.

Mediatonic said in an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit that the developer was hoping for Fall Guys to reach the same level of success as Rocket League. It appears that the colorful battle royale game is well on its way to doing that.

Modern Warfare 4 brings Call of Duty back to its glory days. I hope the streak lives.
Infinity Ward’s latest campaign goes back to Call of Duty’s roots and recaptures what made me a fan more than a decade ago.

The Call of Duty franchise has held a special place in my heart ever since I played my first Black Ops game back in 2010. That game's campaign was something else, with twists and turns that culminated in a mind-blowing finale. We can all admit that compared to those older campaigns, the recent CODs have been lackluster at best, and a complete and utter disappointment at worst. The reboot of Modern Warfare did give me some hope, as the first two installments were actually quite good, but the third game left such a bad taste in my mouth that I wasn’t exactly expecting much from Modern Warfare 4.

After recently finishing the campaign, I can say that this installment is nothing like the recent releases and instead feels closer to the franchise’s roots. For the first time in a long while, the campaign comes across as well-crafted rather than rushed to hit a release date. It arrives three years after MW3, and you can see exactly where all that time went. It seems the studio finally made listening to player feedback a priority.

It’s turning into a pretty good time to be a Monster Hunter fan who plays on a phone. Capcom has confirmed that Monster Hunter Outlanders will launch on Android and iOS on October 29, giving the series a new mobile-first game just as Monster Hunter Rise is also preparing to make the jump to smartphones through Netflix.

Outlanders is being developed by Tencent subsidiary TiMi Studio Group under license and supervision from Capcom. Unlike Rise, which appears to be the full console and PC game adapted for mobile, Outlanders is a free-to-play survival hunting game made specifically for phones.
