Nothing Ear 1 gets Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant access

In a case of going from nothing to everything, Nothing has announced that its Ear 1 true wireless earbuds now support pretty much every voice assistant you could ask for, including Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri (depending on your phone). That’s a big shift from 2021, when the Ear 1 was launched without any voice assistant support at all.

The move comes as something of a surprise given that the company told Android Central that it had no plans to add voice assistant access. Nothing announced the change via a tweet on February 7 that encouraged Ear 1 owners to install a firmware update via the Nothing Ear 1 app.

Android and iOS users will both have the ability to use Alexa with the new update, but only Android users can choose to use Google Assistant with the Ear 1. That’s because Google recently removed the ability for any wireless headphones or earbuds to access the Google Assistant when connected to an iOS product.

Nonetheless, this new feature addresses one of the very few criticisms our reviewer found when he put the Ear 1 through their paces, making these $99 wireless earbuds an even better value.

As welcome as voice assistant access clearly is, not everyone is as pleased with how Nothing is enabling the feature on the Ear 1. It requires the use of a triple-tap gesture and this can’t be changed within the Ear 1 app. As one Twitter user points out, it might not be the best way Nothing could have chosen to incorporate voice assistant access:

Good update but bad execution. What if one is riding a bike and needs to play the music or call.. how am I supposed to triple-tap first while riding. Shouldn't it work on voice alone .. or may be , if nothing, tap and hold?

It seems that several other Ear 1 users would prefer a tap-and-hold option instead of the triple-tap. We’re going to run the update ourselves and see how it works. Once we’ve given it a proper test, we’ll update our Ear 1 review with the details, and — if it lives up to its promise — possibly reconsider our current 8/10 score.

The Ear 1 is Nothing’s first product and was announced in July 2021. The company followed up the white/transparent version with a black/transparent version in December 2021.

Nothing might launch new hi-res earbuds at CES under the XO brand

With two models under its belt -- the Ear 1 and the Ear Stick -- Carl Pei's Nothing brand is no stranger to wireless earbuds. But the maverick smartphone company might be planning something a little different for 2023. It seems as though it's readying its third model of wireless earbuds, according to a tweet from developer Kuba Wojciechowski that was reported by 91mobiles.com. Wojciechowski claims to have found references within Nothing's firmware and also managed to unearth what are claimed to be renders of the as-yet-unannounced product.

Known as "Particles by XO," the wireless earbuds have a unique, peanut-like shape reminiscent of the Sony LinkBuds. Though unlike the LinkBuds, which use a doughnut-shaped driver that allows external sounds to be heard clearly, the Particles use a traditional ear canal-sealing design. The report suggests that these will be active noise-canceling buds, which is consistent with the silicone-tipped design.

Nothing, the technology company led by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, has announced its third product, the Ear Stick. As you can probably guess from the name, this is another audio product, making it Nothing’s second following the Ear 1. Nothing describes the Ear Stick earbuds as having a “half in-ear design,” which means they are much like Apple’s AirPods and do not create a seal in your ear to isolate you from the world. For that, Nothing wants you to buy the Ear 1 headphones, which also have active noise cancellation (ANC).

Each earbud weighs 4.4 grams and are made from plastic, with the now trademark transparent style Nothing introduced with the Ear 1 and then continued with the Nothing Phone 1 smartphone. The case is cylindrical and has an unusual twist action, where the transparent casing moves aside so you can remove the earbuds.

Nothing has started teasing its next product – a pair of wireless earbuds that will come equipped with a cylindrical case. Known as the Ear Stick, they will be vastly different from the Ear (1), contrary to earlier rumors that said Nothing will simply be repackaging the first pair of earbuds in a new case. We can expect the new earbuds to launch later this year.

Lewis Hopkins, Nothing’s U.S. public relations manager, told The Verge that the Nothing Ear Stick "is an entirely new product. New charging case and new bud." Earlier rumors have suggested that the company's next product will share a lot of design elements with its first product. However, the Ear Stick is said to come without silicone eartips, like Apple's non-Pro versions of the AirPods.
