New, lighter and more powerful 2014 Volkswagen Golf R could be well worth the wait

Buyers considering a new Volkswagen Golf R might want to wait a year or so considering that the car is expected to get nearly 40 more horsepower and a few other new features that will make it even more appealing.

According to Auto Express, the next Golf R will likely get up to 300 horsepower compared to 265 in the 2013 model.

Like the current model, the new Golf R will be equipped with a 2.0-litre turbo engine. However, it’s expected to feature a lighter 4WD system, making the new model only around 100kg (220 lbs) heavier than the GTI, which should make it even more exciting to drive than the current one. For comparison, the current Golf R is about 156kg (330 lbs) heavier than the GTI.

Auto Express is also reporting that the new Golf R will likely feature a variation of the GTI’s optional electronically controlled mechanical front limited slip differential for better torque performance and to help reduce the car’s understeer.

Set to make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the new Golf R will also be equipped with an electronic stability control system which can be fully deactivated for those who like a little bit more freedom when at the wheel.

In addition, the new Golf R will reportedly feature quad exhaust tips unlike the previous model, which had two central mufflers.

Even more enticing, the new Golf R is expected to be less expensive than the current 2013 model, which cost around $35,000.
