LG’s head of mobile says “different” and “unique” Optimus G2 coming later this year

The successor to LG’s Optimus G smartphone, tentatively known as the Optimus G2, has been rumored since the end of last year. However, anyone keenly awaiting its arrival must settle down for a bit of a wait, as according to LG’s head of mobile communication in Europe – and he should know – the phone won’t be out until the third quarter this year. This places it sometime after July, but likely before the beginning of the holiday period in October.

Speaking to Trusted Reviews, LG’s Won Kim was surprisingly open about the unofficial phone’s existence, but stopped short of providing any firm details on the handset’s possible specification. He did say the Optimus G2 would be, “something different, something unique, and we have needed to be very creative.”

He also spoke about the device being used to make a push into the UK market, where LG hasn’t had the same amount of success as it has enjoyed in other places, including America. Although we’re describing the phone as the Optimus G2, apparently this name has not been finalized at this stage, which also suggests LG wants to make a clean start – perhaps the Optimus name will be retired?

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the Optimus G2, nor is it a surprise LG is aiming for the second half of 2013 for its release. Last year, it was rumored the G2 would arrive at Mobile World Congress, but this was scuppered a month before the show, when it was revealed LG would focus on a 5-inch, 1080p handset instead. This turned out to be the Optimus G Pro.

At the time, it was said LG would stick to an annual refresh schedule for its flagship Android smartphone, and as the Optimus G Pro was announced in August 2012, this fits in rather well with the latest report.

LG’s confirmation of the Optimus G2’s approximate release also links in with talk it will ship its first flexible displays for smartphones later this year, and we’d certainly describe a phone with such a screen as, “different,” and “unique.” As it seems certain we’ll see the G2, or whatever it ends up being called, during late summer, there’s not long to go before we find out if the two link up.

Someone holding the Honor Magic 6 RSR outside.

There's no doubt that 2024 has already been an exciting year for Android phones. Samsung wowed us with the Galaxy S24 series at the beginning of the year, the OnePlus 12 and 12R are two of the best phones available right now, and Google is expected to impress later this month with the Google Pixel 8a.

But for the last few weeks, I haven't been thinking about any of those phones. Why? Because I've been using the Honor Magic 6 RSR. After launching in China this past March, the Magic 6 RSR is now available in the EU, and that's allowed more folks than ever to get their hands on the phone. And that's great, because the Honor Magic 6 RSR has quickly become my new favorite Android phone of 2024.
