The new highly-anticipated Mercedes-Benz S-class isn’t the only car in the automaker’s line-up that will feature new high-tech equipment.
According to Automotive News, Mercedes-Benz has decided to make some of the same technology features to be offered with the top-line S-class sedans that goes on sale this fall available on the new mid-sized 2014 E-class range.
The auto news source reports that the restyled E-class line-up, which goes on sale in June, will feature some standard and optional safety and handling technology equipment found on the S-class.
One of the features includes an optional steering-assist feature called Distronic Plus that can help the driver keep the vehicle centered in its lane and can semi-autonomously track lines of traffic.
Available as a coupe and cabriolet, the new E-class will initially be sold initially as the E350, equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 with 302 hp, and the E550, that features a 4.6-liter, 402-hp V-8 engine, reports Automotive News. The report also indicates that a 2015 E400 biturbo with an estimated 333 horsepower will replace the E350 coupe and cabriolet this fall.
Additional new standard tech equipment on the E class includes radar-based collision prevention and attention assist systems, a stop-start feature and LED lights. Options, which will also be available on the new S-class, include a system that can detect pedestrians and initiate autonomous braking to avoid a collision at speeds up to 30 mph.
Optional E-class equipment also includes a tech feature called Pre-safe Plus, which can recognize an imminent rear-end collision, then prompt the system to trigger occupant protection measures to reduce the forces of a potential crash.
The system can also apply the stationary vehicle’s brakes in the event of a rear-end collision to prevent secondary accidents.
