Android 4.3.1 quietly slips out, but so far only for 4G LTE versions of the Nexus 7

Google has released the first point update for Android 4.3, but so far its availability is limited only to the 4G LTE version of the Nexus 7 tablet, which is probably why Google hasn’t made any noise about it. Still, although we’ve seen other updates and fixes, this is the first time it has increased the version number of Android 4.3, so it’s notable for that reason alone.

So far, due to its limited release, there are only a few details about the new features it contains. All the usual performance and stability improvements are included, while a screenshot of the update blurb says the following: “Create restricted profiles to limit family members’ access to apps and content on your tablet.” This sounds like it refers to Android 4.3’s restricted profiles, which is already available. Also added is Google Keep, the note-taking app released back in March, which has been available through Google Play.

Nothing very exciting there, and according to AndroidPolice.com, the radio version on the LTE Nexus 7 stays the same with Android 4.3.1 installed. Of course, there could be some hidden features yet to be discovered, and we’ll keep you updated here.

Although Google is busily squashing bugs and (sort of) adding features to Android 4.3, we know its days are numbered as the absolute latest edition, for Android 4.4 KitKat is just around the corner. Its existence has been confirmed, but its feature list is a mystery, but if the rumors are correct it may be introduced before the end of the month. If so, it may be joined by the Nexus 5 smartphone and a larger Nexus 10 tablet.

In the meantime, if you own a 4G Nexus 7, the 4.3.1 update should be coming soon, as reports of its international release are spreading. As for owners of other Nexus or Google Edition hardware, this one may end up not being for you.

Someone holding the Honor Magic 6 RSR outside.

There's no doubt that 2024 has already been an exciting year for Android phones. Samsung wowed us with the Galaxy S24 series at the beginning of the year, the OnePlus 12 and 12R are two of the best phones available right now, and Google is expected to impress later this month with the Google Pixel 8a.

But for the last few weeks, I haven't been thinking about any of those phones. Why? Because I've been using the Honor Magic 6 RSR. After launching in China this past March, the Magic 6 RSR is now available in the EU, and that's allowed more folks than ever to get their hands on the phone. And that's great, because the Honor Magic 6 RSR has quickly become my new favorite Android phone of 2024.
