HP Updates AMD-Powered Notebooks

Computer and equipment maker Hewlett-Packard has updated its AMD-powered Compaq V6000 and HP Pavilion dv6000 and dv9000 notebook systems, aiming the new models at back-to-school shoppers as well as consumers and portable entertainment enthusiasts who find themselves in the throes of budgetary limitations.

The HP Pavilion dv6000 Entertainment Notebook PC offers a 15.4-inch, 1280 by 800 widescreen WXGA display with optional HP BrightView technology, and users’ choice of either AMD Sempron or Turion processors at speeds from 1.6 to 1.8 GHz, a built-in Webcam, a 60 to 120 GB hard drive, and an NVidia GeForce Go 7600 graphics controller. Also along for the ride: Wi-Fi options (including Bluetooth), combo CD/DVD drives or double-layer DVD burner, gigabit Ethernet, integrated modem, 3 USB 2.0 ports, IEE 1394 port, headphone out, S-video output, VGA output. The dv6000 weighs 6.6 pounds, and starts at ust $879.99

AMD may make some of the best graphics cards you can buy, but they aren't selling well. In its financial results for the first quarter of 2024,  AMD shared that gaming revenue was down 33% compared to the previous quarter, and down 48% compared to the same point last year.

In total, AMD brought in $922 million in its gaming segment in the first quarter. For reference, in Nvidia's previous revenue report, it reported $2.9 billion for its gaming segment. AMD attributes the drop in revenue to "a decrease in semi-custom revenue and lower AMD Radeon GPU sales."
