Auto shows are usually where carmakers introduce new models. Mercedes-Benz will indeed be unveiling some new models but also saying goodbye to one this week.
The SLS AMG GT Final Edition is the epitaph of Mercedes’ gull-winged sports car. It’s be unveiled at the 2013 LA Auto Show and 2013 Tokyo Motor Show this week.
The Final Edition will be available as either a coupe or a roadster, with production limited to 350 total units. Once those 350 orders are in, Mercedes says, no more SLS AMGs will be built.
To give the car a fitting sendoff, AMG dressed it up with an unpainted carbon fiber hood, carbon fiber, front splitter, and a fixed carbon fiber rear spoiler. The additions give the Final Edition some of the aggressiveness of the hardcore SLS AMG Black Series. Rounding out the visual upgrades are unique AMG forged alloy wheels.
The carbon fiber bits aren’t just for show, though. Mercedes say they help increase downforce for better handling, and the hood’s central air outlet improves engine bay cooling.
On the inside, the SLS AMG GT Final Edition gets diamond-pattern leather on the seats and door panels with silver stitching. There’s also an AMG Performance steering wheel finished in Alcantara and carbon fiber trim, including a carbon dash plaque with the car’s individual serial number.
What hasn’t changed is the SLS AMG GT’s 6.2-liter V8, which produces the same 583 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque as the regular GT. The 0-60 mph time of 3.6 seconds and the electronically-limited top speed of 197 mph are also unchanged.
