Slathered in combat yellow paint, the Corvette Z06 is coming to the 2014 Detroit Auto Show

Good news Chevrolet performance fans, Corvette fans, and, well, anyone who loves America: The all-new Corvette Z06 is coming to the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month.

Chevy has only released the teaser image you see above. But, boy, that combat yellow paint is enough to get our blood pumping.

We’ve been speculating for many months now that the next high-performance ‘Vette could very well be called the Z07, to match the C7 code name. Clearly, Chevy didn’t bite. We’ve also reported that the new Z06 could be powered by a 600-horsepower version of the twin-turbo 4.5-liter V8 resting under the hood of the Elmiraj concept.

Knowing we had the codename wrong, we wonder if we’re off base on the powerplant, too. Let’s hope not, because it’s time for the ‘Vette to fully modernize.

The ‘standard’ C7 Corvette, the Stingray, is powered by a 6.2-liter direct injected pushrod V8. While some of that tech jargon is up-to-date (direct-injection), the pushrod portion is not. I know what you’re thinking. “If pushrods were good enough to defeat the Nazis, they’re good enough for my ‘Vette.”

I appreciate the sentiment but a twin-turbo Z06 would be pretty darn neat-o indeed. Despite the fact that the Corvette outsold the Porsche 911 in the U.S. this year, we’d love to see Chevy use a state-of-the-art engine to take on the Germans.

As we write this, we are on our way to drive the all-new Stingray Convertible and the Chevrolet SS. So to say this is a good couple days for you Chevy performance enthusiast Digital Trends readers is an understatement.

I’d like to say you’ll have to wait until next month to learn about the 2015 Corvette Z07 that will go into production in late 2014. But that would be a lie.

No, more rumors, theories, and leaked performance specs will surely surface in the next few weeks. So be sure to check back for more.

Rivian R2 vs R1S: How will Rivian’s cheaper SUV compare?
The front three-quarter view of a 2022 Rivian against a rocky backdrop.

Rivian has finally unveiled the R2, its long-awaited attempt at a more affordable electric SUV. The new vehicle may not be available just yet, but fans of Rivian's design aesthetics and feature set are already looking forward to being able to order the new car. The R2 is targeted at being a more affordable take on the electric SUV and will sit alongside the flagship-tier R1S.

Let's get this out of the way right now: The R1S is most likely going to be a better vehicle than the R2. Rivian isn't replacing the R1S with the R2 — it's releasing the R2 as a more affordable alternative, and there will be some compromises when buying the R2 over the R1S.

Don’t let the gimmicks fool you. The Ioniq 5 N is a serious track car
2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N drifting.

We’re finally getting to the fun part of automakers’ methodical quest to replicate their lineups with electric cars.

Performance versions of ordinary cars have been a staple of the auto industry for decades. But while we’ve already seen some variants of EVs boasting more power and more impressive stats — think Tesla Model S Plaid or Lucid Air Sapphire — the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is the first to truly apply that format to an EV.
