Apricorn Launches 128-Bit Encrypted Drives

Whether you’re running a crime empire from a computer in your basement, or just doing your taxes in Quicken, chances are you have some data you don’t want other people to see. On Friday, Data storage company Apricorn released the Aegis Vault line of portable USB hard drives, built especially to fill that need.

Aegis Vault drives use AES 128-bit hardware encryption to encode data in real-time and make sure that it’s only accessible with a password. Besides being encrypted for privacy, the 2.5-inch drives are also shock mounted with a 16-point system to prevent accidental damage.

Prices for the drives begin at $169.99 for the 80GB version, then rise to $199, $229 and $299 for the 120GB, 260GB and 250GB versions, respectively.

If the rumors are true, this approach would mirror Nvidia’s RTX 40 series launch pattern where the RTX 4090 debuted toward the end of 2022, followed shortly by the RTX 4080 a few weeks later. The more affordable RTX 4070 Ti and 4070 were then released in early 2023.
