You’ll soon be able to buy that dormant X handle you’ve had your eye on

X is launching a Handle Marketplace for Premium+ and Business subscribers, with free priority names and paid rare handles.

What’s happened? X is opening a Handle Marketplace that lets paying users hunt for inactive handles. If you pay for the Premium+ or Premium Business subscription, you’ll be able to search, request, and, for some names, pay up.

  • Eligible paid tiers can browse inactive handles, then request priority picks at no cost or go after rare handles for a fee.
  • The Verge reports that rare handles are priced by demand and uniqueness, starting at $2,500 and climbing from there.
  • The Handles Marketplace X account says this is an ongoing service meant to redistribute names that are no longer in use.

The X Handle Marketplace is our industry-first solution to redistribute handles that are no longer in use.

Eligible Premium subscribers will be able to search and make requests, with both complimentary and paid options available.

Why this matters: Usernames now act like retention, which means the handle you really want is tied to your plan. This encourages creators and brands to stay on higher tiers.

  • Downgrade your plan and your account reverts to the original username, the marketplace handle goes away. A new handle might just be your reason to stay on Premium+ despite the price hike.
  • Your old handle is frozen when you switch, and X says a paid redirect could arrive later.
  • This is positioned as a standing subscriber feature, not a one-off perk.

Why should I care? If a dormant account holds your brand or real name, this might finally clear a path. The tradeoff is the paywall, plus the commitment to keep a subscription active.

  • Creators and companies can align their identity on X, which helps reduce confusion and impersonation risk.
  • Everyday users can try for priority handles at no cost, while rare names can run very high.
  • Budget for both the handle and the plan, since keeping the name depends on keeping the subscription.

Okay, what’s next? When the marketplace opens, preparation and speed matter. Expect competition from username squatters, buyers who flip names for profit, so line up targets and be ready.

  • Make a short list of preferred handles, including alternate spellings, in case your first choice is gone. Otherwise, you can try your luck on other platforms and see which of these is the best alternative.
  • Decide whether you’ll pursue a free priority handle or pay for a rare one, then set a hard ceiling.
  • If you land a new handle, plan around the frozen old one, and keep your plan active to retain the name.

Snapchat Planets turns your best friends list into a solar system, and yes, your orbit says a lot

Snapchat+ includes several exclusive features, but few have generated as much curiosity as Snapchat Planets. Part of the app's Friend Solar System, it transforms your Best Friends list into a planetary ranking, assigning each of your top eight friends a planet based on how often you interact.

From Mercury, which represents your closest friend, to Neptune, which represents your eighth closest, the system offers a quick visual snapshot of your interactions. But what do the different planets actually mean, and how does Snapchat decide who gets which one?

TikTok’s AI slop problem is worse than you think — and kids are seeing the most of it
TikTok

TikTok has spent years perfecting the art of knowing exactly what you want to watch next. Open the app, scroll a few times, and suddenly it’s serving videos that feel uncannily tailored to your interests. But what happens before TikTok learns who you are? According to new research from video editing platform Kapwing, the answer is increasingly AI slop.

The study found that nearly 60% of the videos shown to a brand-new TikTok account were low-quality AI-generated content. That’s not a niche problem buried in obscure corners of the platform. It’s the first impression TikTok is making on new users before the algorithm even begins personalizing their feed. And if that sounds concerning, the findings around children’s content are even harder to ignore.
