When your business depends on sending out new orders, a computer problem stopping you from doing that is disastrous. But that’s what’s happened to DVD rental company Netflix.

The company first reported the problem on Tuesday, according to Vnunet, letting customers know that due to a computer problem it was unable to ship discs or acknowledge returns in the usual manner.

By Wednesday the company had some of its distribution centers up and running, but much of the system remained down, and as of yesterday about half its centers were still not working. Netflix is offering customers credit as compensation.

In a blog post yesterday, Netflix head of operations Andy Rendrich wrote:

"We were able to ship some DVDs from about half of our distribution centers yesterday but we haven’t yet been able to resume shipping this morning. We’re as frustrated about this as you are and we once again apologize for the inconvenience."

The issue hasn’t affected Netflix’s video streaming service.

A selfie isn't a crystal ball, but AI researchers say facial photos could offer clues about cancer survival.

An ordinary face photo may contain health clues that aren't immediately obvious. Researchers at Mass General Brigham have developed an AI system that analyzes facial photographs and estimates a cancer patient's biological age and survival chances. The findings, published in The Lancet Digital Health, suggest facial analysis could eventually help doctors make more informed treatment decisions.

How can AI estimate cancer survival from a face?

Yelp’s new AI assistant will call restaurants for you so you can skip the dreaded wait-time call
Restaurants may soon take wait-time calls from Yelp’s bot.
Electronics, Mobile Phone, Phone

I’ll do almost anything (read: everything) to avoid calling a restaurant just to ask how long the wait is. Yelp may have fixed that for me.

The new feature handles that tedious task. It’s part of Yelp Assistant's fall update.
