ViewSonic Enters PC Business with All-in-One VPC100

ViewSonic Enters PC Business with All-in-One VPC100

ViewSonic has managed to make a name for itself over the years offering decently-specced displays at consumer-friendly prices…now the company is looking to bring that momentum into the PC business with its new VPC100 All-in-One computer. Unsurprisingly, the VPC100 is almost nothing but monitor, wrapping an 18.5-inch LCD display in an iMac-like single-slab design with what amounts to an Atom-powered netbook on the inside—and ViewSonic hopes it’ll be a hit with everyone from students and casual home users to libraries, labs, and office settings.

"When people talk about office clutter, it’s not just about paperwork. Traditional computing solutions can be expensive, unattractive, and take up an entire desk," said ViewSonic North America VP and general manager Jeff Volpe, in a statement. "We designed the VPC100 to overcome that ‘computer clutter’ problem with one cable ease and a clean, All-in-One design."

Inside the chassis, the VPC100 is just about equivalent to a netbook computer: it sports a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1 GB of RAM, a 160 GB hard drive, and runs Windows XP. The unit also features both gigabit Ethernet and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi wireless connectivity, two built-in 2.5-watt speakers, an integrated Web cam, four USB 2.0 ports, a 4-in-1 media card reader, and a super multi DVD burner. Front and center on the unit, however, is a feature that immediately distinguishes it from any netbook: an 18.5-inch TFT active matrix LCD display, with a native 1,366 by 768 resolution, 300 cd/m&exp2; of brightness, a 5ms response time, and a 1,000:1 contrast ratio.

ViewSonic says the VPC100 uses about 50 percent less plastic than a typical desktop computer, and also uses about 45 percent less power.

ViewSonic is pricing the VPC100 All-in-One at $599, which is considerable cheaper than the least expensive iMac or HP’s TouchSmart PCs, although the VPC100’s real competition might be so-called net-top computers rather than the more powerful offerings from HP or Apple.

The ViewSonic VPC100 All-in-One is available now from ViewSonic retailers.

DT Giveaway: Enter now to win an HP Envy 32 4K all-in-one desktop PC
HP Envy 32 all-in-one PC giveaway

HP offers a huge range of great computers, but in today’s laptop age, its desktop PCs, unfortunately, don’t get as much attention. And even among desktops, the sleek all-in-one doesn’t always get the love it deserves, but the HP Envy 32-a0035 is a shining example of what these machines are capable of now. If your desk could use a new computer, then step up and roll the dice: We’ve teamed up with HP to give one of our readers a chance to bring home one of these HP Envy 32 4K all-in-one PCs. Read on to find out more about this awesome setup and how you can win it.

The basic idea behind the all-in-one PC is simple: Ditch the bulky desktop computer tower and integrate the hardware into the display housing. This sounds simple, but obviously presents some design challenges, and it’s safe to say that modern hardware advancements (ironically driven by the ubiquity and popularity of laptops) is what made modern all-in-one computers like the HP Envy 32 possible in the first place. Combine that design with the included mouse and keyboard, and you’re pretty much ready to rock right out of the box.

Razer’s most boring product is also one of its best
The Razer Iskur V2 gaming chair in an office.

Razer isn't exactly known for subtlety. This is the company that released a Bane-like RGB face mask, a headset with haptic feedback, and most recently, a mouse pad that has RGB lighting from corner to corner. The Iskur V2 chair is an exercise in subtlety, however, and a change of pace that pays off for Razer in a big way.

There's nothing special about the Iskur V2 at first glance. It's a gaming chair fit with the usual racer-style back and some green trim to let you know it's a Razer product. But there are no motors promising immersive haptic feedback, and no RGB leaving you tethered to a wall outlet (yes, Razer has done both in a chair before). The Iskur V2 is just a well-designed, comfortable chair, and that's exactly why it's so impressive.
