The RAM shortage could last for years, and smaller tech brands are feeling it first

From flexible motherboards to advance orders, device makers are getting creative to keep products alive.

The memory shortage is no longer just a problem for PC builders hunting for affordable RAM. Smaller phone and laptop makers are now changing how they design, manufacture, and price their products as the supply crunch threatens to stretch through 2027 and potentially beyond. And according to a report by Reuters, the bigger problem isn’t even the price anymore. It’s getting enough memory in the first place.

Smaller brands are getting creative because RAM isn’t playing nice

The squeeze is being driven partly by memory manufacturers prioritizing more lucrative products for the booming AI industry. Meanwhile, conventional DRAM and other memory used in consumer devices remain under pressure. TrendForce expects conventional DRAM contract prices to rise another 13% to 18% this quarter, although that’s considerably slower than the 93% to 98% increase seen in the first quarter.

Fairphone, Framework and Jolla are among the companies taking different approaches to the problem. Fairphone has kept its prices unchanged despite higher component costs. Framework, meanwhile, is placing non-cancellable orders much earlier than usual, even without knowing the final price, delivery timing, or exact volume. That’s basically ordering your groceries months in advance and hoping inflation doesn’t eat your wallet.

Jolla has taken a more hardware-focused approach, designing two motherboard variants so it can switch between combined memory packages and individual chips. The company also stress-tests samples from every incoming batch to make sure new memory hasn’t been passed off as refurbished stock. Framework has gone the modular route too, allowing customers to install memory salvaged from older machines.

And the financial impact is becoming difficult to ignore. Fairphone CEO Raymond van Eck told Reuters that memory can account for almost 60% of the bill of materials for phones costing around $400. Companies are therefore handling the pain differently: Framework adjusts prices as costs arrive, Jolla has introduced a paid memory upgrade, while Fairphone has so far chosen not to raise prices.

The memory crunch could reshape the gadgets we buy

The situation could become even more interesting if the shortage lasts as long as some industry executives expect. SK Hynix’s CEO had previously warned that 2027 could be the industry’s worst year from a supply perspective, with demand potentially exceeding capacity beyond 2030. Counterpoint Research has also forecast a 13.9% decline in smartphone shipments this year, partly because rising memory costs are making cheaper phones increasingly difficult to build profitably.

For consumers, that could mean higher prices, fewer cheap devices and fewer generous memory configurations. For smaller brands, meanwhile, the game is becoming less about simply designing a good phone or laptop and more about securing the components needed to actually build it. The companies that can adapt their hardware, lock down supply, and absorb some of the cost may have a better chance of surviving the squeeze.

AI agents are acting like rogues and causing a huge headache for US banks
US banks block AI agents over fears they could make unauthorised financial moves
Banking

US banks are facing a new kind of digital headache: artificial intelligence agents attempting to access customer accounts and perform actions that may go beyond what users intended. As AI tools become more capable of navigating websites and carrying out tasks independently, financial institutions are scrambling to prevent them from crossing security boundaries.

According to a report published by Axios on October 22, major US banks have detected third-party AI agents operating inside customer accounts without authorisation. Some agents reportedly appeared to attempt actions independently of user instructions. The banks involved have not publicly detailed every incident, and there is no evidence that the reported activity resulted in widespread theft of customer funds.

Canva enters the AI image generation race with Craft, and it’s thinking beyond pretty pictures
The new model plans layouts before generating images, with precise editing and support for 30 aspect ratios.

AI can generate all kinds of pretty pictures, but getting it to spell a headline correctly or keep a poster's layout intact can be another story. Canva wants to fix that with Canva Craft, its first in-house image generation model. Rather than focusing primarily on photographs, Craft is designed around the posters, presentations, social media graphics, and other visual content people actually create. The goal is simple: spend less time fixing AI's mistakes and more time making something useful.

Mori might be the cutest AI companion robot yet, and it reacts to you like a pet
The Pokémon-like companion can blink, dance, act shy, and respond to what is happening around it.
OKA Mori The Nature Companion AI Home Robot

With AI progressing so fast, it's only a matter of time before we start getting AI companions like the ones we used to see in movies like R2-D2, Wall-E, or Baymax. Now, Singapore-based OKA Technology has unveiled Mori, a cute little AI companion that looks less like a conventional home robot and more like someone turned the Pokémon Foongus into a table lamp.

Mori isn't meant to clean your house or control your smart home, but to serve as what OKA calls a "Nature Companion." It uses subtle movements, warm lighting, nature-inspired sounds, and small reactions to make its presence around the house feel calming rather than distracting. Mori can sit quietly while you read, sway along to music, welcome you when you enter a room, or encourage you to slow down for a moment without requiring a screen or a conversation.
