The new MacBook Pro has a stabilized camera and it’s a practical perk hiding in plain sight

Apple's touchscreen MacBook Pro promises steadier video calls when fingers hit the display, with a redesigned hinge helping reduce screen wobble

The new MacBook Pro has a camera upgrade worth a closer look amid the touchscreen and OLED excitement. Apple says its advanced video stabilization keeps the camera feed steady when you touch the display, so tapping through a document during a call shouldn’t send a tremor through everyone else’s screen.

A touchscreen invites people to prod the lid while its camera is pointed at their face. Accounting for what the person watching sees is a sensible detail to build around that change.

What does the camera actually do

The 12MP camera includes Center Stage, which keeps you framed as you move around or someone else joins you in front of the laptop. Desk View lets you show your workspace during a call.

Stabilization handles movement of the camera itself. If you’re discussing a photo, Apple’s promise is that you can pinch to inspect a detail without making the view of your face wobble for whoever’s watching.

Touch is meant to sit alongside the keyboard and trackpad, giving you another way to interact when reaching for the display feels convenient. Doing that during a conversation shouldn’t require an apology to everyone in the meeting.

How does the hinge help

Apple also tackled movement at the hinge. Speaking to Wired, hardware chief Johny Srouji said the company redesigned it to reduce display wobble when someone touches the screen.

That addresses the experience for the person doing the tapping. A display that moves under your fingers can make touch input feel awkward. The hinge aims to reduce that physical movement, while camera stabilization addresses its effect on the video feed.

What should buyers look for

Apple’s camera description doesn’t explain how the stabilization works or whether it involves any cropping or image-quality tradeoffs. Those details deserve scrutiny in reviews, particularly for anyone who spends much of the workday on video calls.

Start a call, scroll through a document using the touchscreen, and check what the other person sees. Check how firmly the hinge holds the display, too. A feature this modest earns its keep by being difficult to notice.

I found a smart reason to buy Apple’s touchscreen MacBook, and it’s Xcode
Apple's $2,899 MacBook Pro might be a developer's dream

Apple has just introduced a new touchscreen MacBook Pro, and the moment I saw the press material, I was intrigued owing to one crucial upgrade – support for touch input on its OLED screen. Apple's response to people asking for a touchscreen-enabled MacBook used to be that macOS was never built to support a touch interface. There is plenty of hot chatter going on about the"need for a touchscreen on a MacBook" in the first place, and given Apple's historical dismissal of a touch-sensitive display on Macs, it's somewhat justified.

I've used plenty of touchscreen Windows laptops over the years, but I didn't expect to pay nearly $3,000 for Apple's own take on such a notebook. But as someone who just got into the world of app development, I can see a genuinely compelling reason for the upgrade. Or maybe, it's just me trying to convince myself that there's a genuinely practical benefit to spending nearly three thousand dollars on a new laptop, ditching one that is already working fine for me.
