OpenAI is bringing its Dot agent into your regular messaging app, so you can assign tasks without opening ChatGPT. The texting feature is rolling out in beta to ChatGPT Pro users in the US, with support for Apple’s iMessage and Android’s RCS. You can send your Dot text, photos, and voice messages, and also receive proactive texts when it has relevant updates.

By popular request, you can now text your dot.

Give it a task to take off your plate or something to keep an eye on, using text, photos, or even voice notes. It will text you proactively with relevant updates.

Texting your ChatGPT Dot agent works like texting a friend

Setting this up takes just a few steps. Open your Dot’s profile in the ChatGPT mobile or desktop app, or on desktop web, and select Texting. Verify your phone number, save the contact your dot sends back, and message it to begin. For iMessage, use the verified phone number. Android users need to enable RCS in their messaging app.

After that, you can hand it a task, ask it to monitor something, or send it photos and voice messages, and it will text you back once there’s an update worth sharing.

Using context from your ChatGPT conversations and connected channels, it can even choose where to send updates. However, you can override that and tell Dot to text you only when something urgent comes up, and keep routine updates inside ChatGPT. If a task needs your approval, it sends a link so you can review the request directly in the app.

Is texting your Dot private, and what are its limitations?

OpenAI says only you can text your Dot, and it can only message you. Setting up the feature does not give Dot or OpenAI access to your other text conversations.

There are a few limits, though. Texting supports one-to-one conversations. This feature doesn’t support group chats, phone calls, or FaceTime, though calling your Dot inside ChatGPT still works. For now, this is a US-only beta for ChatGPT Pro subscribers. If you’re on another plan or outside the US, you’ll have to wait for broader availability.

What’s actually new and different on the MacBook Pro PROLED XDR? Here’s everything you need to know
Touchscreen vs. non-touchscreen MacBook Pro differences

Apple has unveiled its first-ever touchscreen MacBook Pro. The company seems a bit confused about the naming, calling it the "MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display," which is tough to remember. If you look past that and review the full spec sheets, you might ask a genuine question: what are the differences between the touchscreen and non-touchscreen versions?
