Mortal Kombat: Legacy director takes on The Guns of Christmas Past

Mortal Kombat: Legacy director Kevin Tancharoen earned a lot of attention for his impressive live-action webseries based on the iconic fighter franchise from Midway Games (and later Warner Bros). Now it appears that he’s found his next big project — and it looks like something the action-friendly style of the director should be well suited to handle.

According to Deadline, Tancharoen will direct The Guns Of Christmas Past, an upcoming, dark spin on Charles Dickens’ classic story “A Christmas Carol.” The film follows a retired hitman who travels to Chicago on Christmas Eve to avenge the death of a friend, but he must contend with enemies from his past, present, and future before he can find resolution. The film is written by Andrew Hilton, with Dallas Buyers Club producers Zev Foreman and Nicolas Chartier serving as producers.

While Mortal Kombat: Legacy and the short film that spawned it, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, earned Tancharoen quite a bit of cred for his work with action sequences and the gritty, dark tone of the series, his other projects have been anything but gritty and dark. Along with a number of musical and dance-themed projects (including the Dancelife television series), Tancharoen directed the 2009 remake of Fame, a modernized spin on the 1980 classic about students at the former New York City High School of Performing Arts. He also directed the 2011 documentary Glee: The 3D Concert Movie, based on the television series.

There’s no release date set for The Guns of Christmas Past at this point.
