Woz isn’t impressed with smartwatches, but says there’s still hope for Apple’s iWatch

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak certainly doesn’t shy away from speaking his mind about the latest technology. Recently, Woz expressed his views on smartwatches in general and gave his two cents on Apple’s iWatch in an email exchange with a CNet reporter.

“I feel that wearables are a hard sell,” Woz said. “They are go-betweens for your smartphone but are an extra piece and need special advantages that the smartphone doesn’t have, in my opinion. If they are just a Bluetooth go-between then it could wind up in the category of Bluetooth headsets: Fun to wear and show off for a day.”

Sure enough, smartwatches like those in Samsung’s Gear collection, the G Watch, and Sony’s smartwatch line have faced tough criticism from users and reviewers alike who find them too big, too bulky, and impractical. Recently, companies have invested more in design, but even the round Moto 360 is now criticized for being too thick. So far, only watches like the Martian Notifier and the upcoming LG G Watch R seem to garner positive feedback.

Even though Woz doesn’t like the smartwatches that currently exist, he does think that Apple could potentially transform the category like it did smartphones when it launched the first iPhone.

“Apple works very hard to produce exceptionally great products and doesn’t quickly release things like a wearable. So if one is introduced I expect it to have a chance to set the direction and make the product category finally viable,” Woz said.

He added that Apple’s focus on fitness is likely to put the iWatch in a league of its own. One thing Woz thinks smartwtach makers should reconsider immediately is the small screen size.

“The small 1.5-inch by 1.5-inch screens don’t hack it for me,” he said. However, in this regard, he may be on his own. Typically, people criticize smartwatches for being too big — not for being too small.

FCC filing reveals impressive specs for luxury Movado Connect 2.0 smartwatch
Movado Connect wrist color

If you've been waiting for an updated version of the Movado Connect smartwatch from 2017, then your wait may finally be at an end. According to an FCC filing (spotted by Droid Life), the Swiss watchmaker is putting the final touches to the upgraded version of its premium smartwatch. Here's everything we know about the Movado Connect 2.

FCC filings are pretty short on design specifications, but mentions of the watch as "MOVADO CONNECT 2.0/40" in the documents lead us to believe the casing for the watch will come in at 40mm. With the original watching rocking in at a sizeable 46.5mm, that's a significant downgrade in size. Still, it'll most likely be a welcome change. There's also mention of a leather and metal strap, so expect to have swappable straps too. The only color mentioned thus far is black.

Razer Anzu smart glasses deal knocks $140 off the price tag
The Razer Anzu smart glasses placed on top of an open book.

While smartwatch deals have slowly claimed their place in the mainstream, smart glasses haven't turned out to be as popular. Gaming-focused brand Razer, however, is trying to renew interest in smart glasses with the Razer Anzu, which you can currently purchase from Best Buy at $140 off. If you'd like to give them a try, they're available for just $60, less than half their original price of $200.

There have been failures like the Google Glass and Snap Spectacles, and hopeful attempts like Oppo's Air Glass and Apple's secretive project, but the Razer Anzu smart glasses take a different spin on the wearable device by designing them for indoors. While they come with polarized sunglass lenses, their clear lenses are more useful with their blue light filter, which protects your eyes from screen glare to prevent discomfort even after hours of playing video games or working from home. The smart glasses, which also have a built-in omnidirectional microphone and speakers, may also be more comfortable to wear for an extended period of time compared to headsets and headphones. You'll enjoy smooth, stutter-free sound with the Razer Anzu's low latency audio with a 60ms Bluetooth connection.
