‘Twin Peaks’ to make its unsettling return to TV on Showtime in 2016

Let’s face it, Twin Peaks fans: You’ve never gotten over your love affair with the eeriest show this side of The Twilight Zone. Luckily, it appears this long-lingering relationship has at least one more liaison in store — 25 years later.

Following a haunting promise from deceased homecoming queen, Laura Palmer, who’s murder started it all, David Lynch and Mark Frost have partnered up with Showtime to release a new installment of Twin Peaks, slated for the show’s 25-year anniversary in 2016.

As Cnet reported, Lynch and Frost both tweeted fittingly enigmatic messages about the show’s return over the weekend, writing, “Dear Twitter Friends: That gum you like is going to come back in style! #damngoodcoffee.”

Rumors that the show would actually return for a new installment, as opposed to simply sparking a buzz for a Blu-ray release, were confirmed today when Showtime put together this ambiguous, yet unquestionably intriguing new trailer for the series’ return. There’s not much to go on, and the short, unsettling scene offers more questions than answers, showing only the number 2016, Showtime, and that iconic road sign that devotees of the show know and love. But then again, that’s a lot like the series itself.

However, a recent report from Variety fleshes out more details. According to an interview with Frost, Showtime will air 9 new episodes, with Lynch directing, which will not be a reboot, but will “reflect the passage of time since viewers last checked in with key characters.” Showtime will also reportedly be airing episodes from the original two seasons leading up to the new installments in 2016.

“For those followers of the show who felt bereft when the show ended where it did all those years ago are going to like where it goes from here,” Frost said.

If you still miss the strange ride that became a cult-classic, and also spawned its own feature film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, it’s time to strap in and get ready for one more journey to that spooky logging town in Washington.
