The 13 best (and worst) gaming tattoos we’ve ever seen

Add as a preferred source on Google

There’s no denying the significance and popularity of video games in today’s society. Whether we play them to unwind from a stressful day of work or purely for entertainment, video games provide an incredible outlet for a multitude of people. Because of its joy-inducing nature, it’s no surprise the video game industry continues to grow at a rapid pace and has become beloved by millions.

Chances are you consider yourself part of these millions, but just how far would you take your love of video games? Maybe you’d hang up a handful of posters around your house, compile a collection of video game figurines, or even opt for every “Collector’s Edition” of your favorite title. But would you consider doing something even more drastic; maybe something you’d never have the ability to part with?

This is exactly what the following gamers did when they decided to decorate their bodies with tattoos of their favorite video games and characters. So, while tattoos and video games don’t necessarily go hand in hand, these individuals found a unique way to declare their allegiances, and the results are fascinating. What follows are our picks of the best gaming tattoos from around the Web, as well as a few of the worst.

Tattoo wins

Gears of War

When Epic Games released the first Gears of War on the Xbox 360 in 2006 it quickly spawned a legion of loyal followers. Little did the developers know it would push people to adorn their bodies with the game’s popular protagonist, Marcus Fenix. The above tattoo references the cover of the franchise’s second installment, Gears of War 2, with the tattoo artist accurately portraying the game’s immense detail. Sadly, a tattoo of this scale didn’t unlock any in-game — or in-life — achievements for this bold soul.

Super Mario Bros. 3

It’s no stretch to say most people who owned an NES in the ’90s have fond memories of their time spent with Super Mario Bros. 3. But getting a half-sleeve tattoo of the game to commemorate those memories? A much rarer feat. Nevertheless, this Mario superfan accomplished this very exploit and captured the game’s style in perfect fashion.

Mortal Kombat

This Mortal Kombat arm sleeve shows one fan’s true dedication to one of the longest running fighting franchises of all time, for better or worse. Featuring the likenesses of Scorpion, Raiden, and Ermac, this particular fan displays his eclectic taste in character choices. Also emblazoned amidst the chaos of the sleeve’s artwork is the updated version of the series’ iconic dragon logo. This arm sleeve certainly took several visits to the tattoo parlor, though it’s clear the finished product is a flawless victory.

The Legend of Zelda

No doubt one of the cleanest tattoos of the bunch, this Legend of Zelda inspired work is quite the spectacle. Weaving together Ocarina of Time, Skyward Sword, and the game’s iconic Triforce symbol, it’s a perfectly constructed tribute to one of Nintendo’s most beloved series. If only Link knew it was as easy as just getting a tattoo to assemble the Triforce.

Pokemon

What do you do when your Pokemon Red game cartridge finally goes kaput? Obviously you get a giant, full-colored tattoo featuring your favorite character. This particular Pokemon fanatic decided to never leave home without his fire-breathing sidekick, Charizard. Though much to his or her dismay, this version of Charizard does not come with its standard Blaze ability.

God of War

This loyal Sony fan gives its God of War franchise a proper tribute with an epic, sprawling back tattoo. Featuring a scene taken from the second game in the franchise, God of War II, the artist behind this piece accurately portrays Kratos’ brutal savagery. Shown wielding his signature Blades of Athena, the scene depicts Kratos doing what he does best; slaughtering anything and everything he sets his eyes on. Unfortunately for the bearer of this tattoo, people won’t remember who Kratos is when they set their eyes on this tattoo in five years.

Shigeru Miyamoto

Who knew Joel Thomas Zimmerman (better known as Deadmau5) was such a huge Shigeru Miyamoto fan? Judging by the already inked Legend of Zelda heart meter tattoo, and the ear-to-ear grin, Zimmerman seems no stranger to Miyamoto or his impressive work history. Should we expect a Nintendo-themed mashup album from the accomplished DJ soon?

Street Fighter

Street Fighter’s Dhalsim character famously utilizes an arsenal of moves using his out-stretched arms and legs. Not only does this piece highlight his fighting style so perfectly, but it’s one of the most unique and clever gaming tattoos we’ve seen. Though, based on the rest of our list, it wasn’t very hard to achieve this.

Super Mario Bros.

Another Super Mario tattoo makes an appearance on this list because why not give the most popular video game character of all-time more notoriety? Though unlike the first Mario entry, this particular tattoo features the likes of his main foe Bowser, and his less-popular brother Luigi. Despite Bower’s nose looking a little funky, the tattoo artist behind this piece did a sensational job of capturing what makes Mario, Mario. Judging by the look on Luigi’s face, we get the strange feeling he knows more about what happened to Princess Peach than Bowser.

Tattoo fails

For every great gaming tattoo there exists a bevy of downright awful pieces of work and we’ve found a few of our absolute favorites. Consider this a great lesson on what not to do the next time you’re at a tattoo parlor.

Super Mario Bros.

It’s never a good idea to get a neck tattoo, though getting “Game Over” inked there somehow makes the decision even worse. You have to imagine it’s game over for this person to ever find decent employment, let alone decent friends. At least this gives them a reason to wear more turtlenecks because we all need more reasons to wear turtlenecks. Thank you, Steve Jobs.

Bioshock

No matter how much you love Bioshock, getting the game’s iconic phrase “Would you kindly” tattooed on your chest is just wrong. Those Adam and Eve hypos won’t save you from employers asking you to kindly get lost, or family members kindly asking you to cover up. We won’t deny how clean the tattoo is, so at least she has that going for her.

Street Fighters

Considering what’s going on with the rest of this guy’s noggin, the Ryu tattoo hardly seems like his poorest decision. Not only does it look like he has a fifth grader as his hair stylist, but he also decided to add seven lines of binary code to the back of his head. Naturally, adding Ryu firing off his signature hadouken gives his head just the thing it’s always lacked; style and class.

Sega Genesis

We all loved playing the Sega Genesis growing up, but we’d never get the system’s controller branded across our chest. Thankfully, this gamer added a few roses to give people something else to look at while she shows off her new artwork. Even with how famous Sega made Sonic, would he even consider getting this tattoo? We think not.

You don’t need a Switch to play Mario Kart. This YouTube video somehow lets you join the race.
Someone smuggled Rainbow Road into YouTube, and it kind of works
Electronics, Phone, Mobile Phone

A pair of creators has found a way to make YouTube more than just a video streaming experience. You can now play Mario Kart inside it. Atlas Arcade and Animated Subtitles have created a fan-made interactive video that lets desktop users drive through Rainbow Road using keyboard controls.

It lasts just over a minute and offers a stripped-down version of the familiar kart-racing experience, yet the technical trickery behind it is far more interesting than its size suggests. This is not an official Nintendo release or a complete browser port of Mario Kart. It is a YouTube video twisted into behaving like a game, and that may be even cooler.

Xbox spins off four studios, including Senua-maker Ninja Theory, as mass layoffs begin
Thankfully, these cuts won't lead to cancellation of any publicly announced first-party games or projects.
Project Helix Xbox Asha Sharma Featured

Microsoft's Xbox division has kick-started a big reset today, a move it has been hinting at for weeks. The company has announced layoffs covering approximately 3,200 roles throughout 2027, of which nearly half of the roles are being terminated starting today. Additionally, the gaming arm is letting go of four studios, including Ninja Theory, which developed the smash hit Senua series of games. Notably, the company assures that none of the first-party games that have already been announced will be affected or cancelled.

Google executive ports Command & Conquer Generals: Zero Hour to iPhone and Mac using Claude
A classic PC RTS is now running natively on iPhone, and Claude helped make it happen

AI-powered game development has recently been blamed for flooding app stores with low-effort mobile games, but every now and then, the technology produces a far more interesting result. Google lead product and design executive Ammar Reshi says he used Fable 5 to port Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour to the iPhone and iPad.

This is not an emulator or a cloud-streamed version. According to Reshi’s GitHub page, the actual 2003 game engine has been compiled natively for ARM64 and runs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The project uses EA’s GPL source release and builds on existing community work, while adding the iOS and iPadOS port.
