As if the XC90 wasn’t handsome enough, Volvo flaunts sporty ‘R-Design’ variant in Detroit

Simply put, the Volvo XC90 is one of the best-looking SUVs on the market.

Between its Thor-inspired LED headlights, commanding side profile, and understated sense of class, the XC90 is like no Volvo before. At the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, Volvo is flaunting a new version.

The sporty R-Design variant was announced by the Swedish brand in September, but its display at this year’s NAIAS is giving journalists and other lucky onlookers the chance to see the all-new Volvo in the metal for the first time.

The XC90 is finished with gorgeous matte blue paint, with a revised front grill and aggressive lower bumper that expel any sentiments that this is just another pedestrian people-carrier.

There are exclusive 20-inch wheels (22-inchers are also available), silver mirror covers, silver roof rails, and silver window surrounds highlighting the SUV’s retooled design, and the enhancements continue inside the cabin.

The shift knob, pedals, and steering wheel have all been given the R-Design makeover, and the new sport seats look luscious. The various interior controls are accessed primarily via touch screen (the XC90 only has eight buttons in total), giving the inside the same upscale, modern, but not overdone feel as the exterior.

The all-new SUV isn’t just about style, though. While there are no major mechanical upgrades to the R-Design that we know of, the XC90 is offered with a wide range of Volvo’s Drive-E powertrains.

As all trims do, the base T5 equips a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces around 260 horsepower. Stepping up to the T6, a supercharger is bolted on, boosting the four-pot’s output to 320 hp. The range-topping T8 model adds an electric motor to the equation, which sends 80 jolted ponies to the rear axle for a total yield of 400 hp and 470-pound feet of torque.

Tesla cars at Superchargers

Tesla is facing an unusual security problem in the US, and it is happening before many of its batteries even make it onto the road. According to an investigation by WIRED, multiple truckloads of Tesla batteries have allegedly been stolen directly from the company's Nevada Gigafactory, highlighting a growing wave of organised cargo theft targeting high-value technology shipments.

BYD has made no secret of its ambition to build more of its own technology. That includes everything from batteries to electric motors, and now even the AI chips that power advanced driver assistance systems. But despite all that momentum, the company’s latest move suggests it’s not ready to cut ties with outside chipmakers just yet. Instead, BYD appears to be taking the practical route.
