Veteran tough-guy actor and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has made it clear that he’s back in action with upcoming roles in Terminator: Genisys and a still-untitled sequel in the Conan the Barbarian franchise. But his next on-screen appearance seems geared to suggest that he’s not quite the same minimum-dialogue, maximum-action actor audiences have grown accustomed to seeing. In Maggie, he plays a doting father who brings his daughter home to die among her loved ones after she becomes infected with the zombie virus that has ravaged the world.
The new trailer for the film, which will be released simultaneously in theaters and On Demand this May, offers the first look at what is being described as a truly heart-wrenching spin on the zombie genre that pits the strength of a father’s love against the terrifying disease that threatens everything he holds dear. Oscar-nominated actress Abigail Breslin plays the daughter, who finds her life being cut short by the slow-developing virus.
The script for Maggie was penned by John Scott 3, and the film is being directed by Henry Hobson, who previously directed a memorable trailer for Insomniac Games’ alien-invasion shooter Resistance 3 back in 2011.
Maggie was originally expected to premiere in 2014 at various film festivals, but was snatched up by distributor Lionsgate Films shortly before its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and pulled from the festival’s schedule in favor of a wide release in theaters this year.
The film hits theaters and On Demand services May 8.
