Audi prices its stylish, sporty, and all-new 2016 TT coupe at $42,900

It’s no coincidence that the redesigned Audi TT was the first production model to sport the German automaker’s new design language; the TT means a lot to the brand. That’s why Audi drew inspiration for the redesign from its original, and highly praised first-generation.

Audi calls the 2016 TT a “modern take on the bold original,” and much like the all-new R8, some will love it or hate the design direction, and that’s OK. That said, now that Audi has released pricing information for the model range, it’s hard to hate what you can get for the money, if you can stay away from the options.

The entry level TT coupe starts at $42,900 and is powered by a 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder developing 220 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque. That power gets to all four wheels via a six-speed S-tronic automatic transmission. 0 to 60 mph takes 5.3 seconds and all models are electronically limited to 155 mph top speed.

Next up is the TT Roadster, which starts at $46,400 and receives the same hardware as the Coupe, including Audi’s Drive Select system which let’s users tune the steering, throttle response, and suspension dampening to suit their tastes.

Finally, the TT S kicks things up a notch in price and performance, checking in at $51,900 for a 292 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque TFSI four-cylinder. That setup is good for a 0 to 60 mph run of 4.6 seconds. They aren’t supercar figures, but the TT S shouldn’t have trouble keeping up with all but the quickest vehicles on the road.

Regardless of which flavor of TT you choose, each gets a generous list of standard features, including a full-LED instrument gauge, automatic climate control (which shows temperature readouts on the actual vents), Audi’s MMI touch infotainment system with Bluetooth music and calling, heated, 12-way power adjustable sport seats (which are more tightly bolstered in the TT S), leather interior, LED interior lighting, 18-inch alloy wheels on the TT and Roadster/19-inch wheels on the TT S, parking sensors, and LED headlights and taillights.

Those creature comforts could be enough to satisfy most consumers, but Audi is counting on buyers to option up their cars to ridiculous prices. Here’s how to do just that.

Technology Package:

  • Audi MMI Navigation System Plus
  • Auto-dimming, power-folding exterior mirrors, heated
  • Audi Connect, with online services
  • Parking system plus
  • Rear-view camera
  • Audi side assist

Audi Design Selection Package (available on the TT Coupe and Roadster):

  • Murillo brown fine Nappa leather
  • Slate gray interior elements
  • Extended leather package in stone gray
  • Aluminum drift decorative inlays
  • S Sport seats with contrast diamond stitching in steel gray

Launch Edition Package (TT S only):

  • Mythos black metallic exterior
  • Express red fine Nappa leather interior
  • 19-inch five-arm forged wheels
  • Bang & Olufsen sound system
  • Piano black inlays
  • Red brake calipers
  • Extended leather package
  • Technology package

Pricing for each package has yet to be revealed, but unless you crave that “extended leather,” I’d recommend sticking with the standard features of a stylish, sporty, and fair-priced ride.

BYD’s $12,000 Qin Plus DM-i shows how much US buyers are overpaying for their cars
A cheap commuter car that could take you from New York to Miami without refueling? Yes, please.
BYD Qin Plus DM-i feature

BYD has launched the third-generation Qin Plus DM-i in China, and the first thing that caught my eye is its price. According to CarNewsChina, the plug-in hybrid sedan starts at 79,900 yuan, which is about $11,980. That’s an incredibly low price for a brand-new car, especially by US standards.

What’s even more impressive is the range. The Qin Plus DM-i can drive up to 137 miles on electricity alone, which should cover most people’s daily commutes without using a drop of gas. Once the battery runs out, the 1.5-liter engine takes over. Thanks to its 17-gallon tank and roughly 91 mpg with a drained battery, the combined range reaches up to 1,423 miles.

Apple edges out a win in the PC market’s worst quarter by stumbling less than everyone else
Apple basically has a bigger share of a shrinking pie.
Computer, Electronics, Laptop

Apple won the PC market’s worst quarter, but that’s not the entire story. It won the race by stumbling less than everyone else.

PC makers shipped just 57 million computers worldwide in Q3, which might look good, but it’s a 21% year-over-year plunge (via Counterpoint Research). And despite Apple’s Mac shipments falling by 11%, to 5.6 million, its market share rose from 8.7% to 9.8%. How did that happen?

GM is giving OnStar AI smarts and a new way to monitor your parked car
GM's 2027 OnStar overhaul will introduce an AI assistant for natural-language vehicle controls and a new camera feature that records certain incidents around parked cars.
GM OnStar featured

Update (October 22 23:54 PT): In response to our query, GM clarified that offline recording support is already available on eligible vehicles. Like Tesla's Sentry Mode, it requires owners to connect a USB drive to save incident recordings, which can be viewed on the vehicle's infotainment screen. The upcoming Connected Cameras feature will build on this by giving owners remote access to these recordings via the revamped OnStar app, allowing them to check footage without walking out to their car.

General Motors has announced plans to add a new Connected Cameras feature to its OnStar service starting next year, giving drivers a way to monitor parked vehicles remotely and capture footage of certain incidents.
