Sherlock’s Victorian special will come to screens big and small in January

Sherlock: The Abominable Bride will also get a limited theatrical release, reports Deadline.

The 90-minute special transports our favorite socially maladroit detective and his patient sidekick from the modern era to the setting of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Holmes stories, Victorian England — for intentionally unexplained reasons. There the pair continue their crime-solving with a very special case.

It will kick the New Year off right for fans, premiering in the U.S. on PBS and in the U.K. on BBC One on Jan. 1. For those who prefer a grander viewing experience than their home theater might offer, Sherlock: The Abominable Bride will also open in select theaters worldwide.

In the U.S., the theatrical debut is set for Jan. 5-6 and some 500 cinemas will screen the special. Hitting theaters will also bring along 20 minutes of exclusive footage, including a making-of short starring Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes) and Martin Freeman (Dr. John Watson). Tickets are set to go on sale on Nov. 6, and because showings are limited, fans will want to make sure to purchase them as soon as they can.

So far, plot details are still largely under wraps, but the newly unveiled title and the presence of the titular bride in the latest preview have given new clues. Her appearance is short, but she makes a big impression as she fires shots while dressed in full bridal regalia. The special looks like quite the adventure, and the chance to see it in theaters makes it that much more exciting.

Sherlock: The Abominable Bride premieres on Jan 1. at 9/8 CST on PBS, with an encore set for Jan. 10 at 10/9 CST.

It's a new month, and that means new movies on Hulu. And somebody over there really loves Tom Hanks. Because in this month alone, Hulu is adding Hanks' directorial debut, That Thing You Do, one of his most iconic films, Big, and one of his most recent hits, Elvis. Robert Zemeckis directed the film from a script by William Broyles Jr. It cast Hanks as Chuck Noland, a FedEx employee who survives a plane crash in the Pacific ocean, only to find himself stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere without anyone to turn to but himself. Cast Away was actually a big hit in late 2000 and during the early part of 2001, earning $429.6 million worldwide. That may not have translated into Oscar gold for two-time Best Actor winner Hanks, but Cast Away is an unforgettable film that deserves a new audience nearly 24 years after it hit theaters.
