Mercedes-Benz’s commercial vehicles division has added an extra dose of luxury to the V-Class, a mid-size van sold in an array of overseas markets that’s closely related to the work-focused Metris.

Called V-Class Exclusive, the range-topping model is designed to carry six people in the utmost luxury. Its cabin has been decked out with brushed aluminum-look trim on the center console, a leather-upholstered dashboard with contrast stitching, chromed accents around the air vents, and brushed aluminum pedals. All six captain’s chairs are upholstered with nappa leather, and the passengers benefit from a premium 16-speaker sound system manufactured by Burmester.

Mercedes has also added a new center console with a large integrated cooler and LED-illuminated cupholders that are both heated and cooled. The list of standard features includes a 230-volt outlet to keep mobile devices juiced up, numerous USB slots, navigation, a 360-degree camera that facilitates the task of maneuvering the van in tight spaces, and Mercedes’ crosswind assist technology.

The V-Class Exclusive intentionally retains a low-key appearance. It gains 19-inch alloy wheels, discreet “Exclusive” emblems on both fenders, a sport suspension that slightly lowers the ride height, and a giant panoramic sunroof that is 74.8 inches in length. Interestingly, sensors detect when the van has been parked with the sunroof wide open and automatically switch it to the “tilt” position if it begins to rain.

Technical specifications haven’t been published. The regular V-Class packs Mercedes’ ubiquitous 2.1-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine available with either 136, 163, or 190 horsepower. Buyers can choose between front- and all-wheel drive.

Already on sale in its home country of Germany, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class Exclusive carries a base price of €74,911 (over $83,000) once taxes are factored in. To put that figure into perspective, the van costs a few hundred euros more than a base model GLS, Mercedes’ range-topping SUV. At the time of writing Mercedes-Benz has not announced plans to sell a similarly-equipped version of the Metris in the United States.

Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV tries to balance power and efficiency with mild-hybrid V8
Mercedes-Benz GLE580 4Matic

The Mercedes-Benz GLE luxury SUV is adding V8 muscle, but that doesn't mean Mercedes is ignoring fuel economy. The GLE580 model's twin-turbocharged V8 adds more power to the recently redesigned SUV, but the bigger engine is teamed with a mild-hybrid system aimed at keeping gas mileage at a respectable level. The GLE580 launches in the United States alongside the rest of the redesigned 2020 GLE lineup later this year.

On its own, the 4.0-liter V8 makes 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, according to Mercedes. A 48-volt electrical system and starter-generator can produce an extra 21 hp and 184 lb.-ft. for short periods. Electricity for the hybrid system is harvested under braking and stored in a small battery pack. In addition to providing a temporary power boost, it also powers accessories like the water pump and air-conditioning compressor, taking some of the workload off the engine. Mercedes didn't divulge gas mileage figures, so it's unclear exactly how effective all of these measures are at saving fuel. The same powertrain will also be used in the larger Mercedes-Benz GLS.

Rivian R2 vs R1S: How will Rivian’s cheaper SUV compare?
The front three-quarter view of a 2022 Rivian against a rocky backdrop.

Rivian has finally unveiled the R2, its long-awaited attempt at a more affordable electric SUV. The new vehicle may not be available just yet, but fans of Rivian's design aesthetics and feature set are already looking forward to being able to order the new car. The R2 is targeted at being a more affordable take on the electric SUV and will sit alongside the flagship-tier R1S.

Let's get this out of the way right now: The R1S is most likely going to be a better vehicle than the R2. Rivian isn't replacing the R1S with the R2 — it's releasing the R2 as a more affordable alternative, and there will be some compromises when buying the R2 over the R1S.
