Revamped classic Carmageddon: Max Damage heads for consoles, PCs in 2016

Gory vehicular action game Carmageddon: Max Damage will make its console debut for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year, developer Stainless Games announced this week.

The upcoming release will mark the Carmageddon franchise’s first appearance on consoles since the 1999 release of Carmageddon 64 for the Nintendo 64.

A controversial release in its day, the original Carmageddon was banned or censored in multiple countries due to its graphically violent gameplay. Inspired by the cult film Death Race 2000, Carmageddon awards players bonuses for mowing down innocent bystandards as they race through expansive urban environments. Players progress through each of the game’s levels by either taking first place in a race, destroying all competing vehicles, or killing all pedestrians.

Carmageddon: Max Damage is an upgraded version of Carmageddon: Reincarnation, a Kickstarter-funded continuation for the series that launched for Windows PCs in 2015. Reincarnation retained the franchise’s traditional car-wrecking, pedestrian-murdering gameplay and upgraded the core experience with new vehicles, playable arenas, and gameplay objectives.

According to developer Stainless Games, the upcoming console versions of Carmageddon: Max Damage will feature a single-player campaign with six different event types and online multiplayer functionality across four included modes.

Players who purchased Carmageddon: Reincarnation on Steam or who backed the franchise’s return on Kickstarter will receive a free copy of the PC version of Carmageddon: Max Damage at launch.

“We hope you’re as excited as us at the prospect of Carmageddon reaching a wider audience through console,” Stainless Games stated. “But don’t worry – we haven’t forgotten about your support – and because we value your continued loyalty so much, when Carmageddon: Max Damage is released on PC you will automatically receive a copy. Yes, that’s another Carmageddon in your Steam library – for free!”

Carmageddon: Max Damage is slated for a “mid-2016” release for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC platforms.
