3M Debuts 10-finger Multitouch Display

3M is once again pushing the boundaries of conventional technology with its new multi-touch LCD display. The 3M Display M2256PW is a 22-inch high definition display that’s designed for professional and consumer applications that need up to 10-finger touch input or multi-user interactivity with very fast response time. Most technologies available only support two-finger touch, but 3M says its multi-touch technology supports10-finger touch input and also has advanced gesture capabilities.

The 3M Display M2256PW features a high-definition 1680 x 1050 LCD screen, DVI and VGA video input, audio input, USB and RS232 (serial) dual-mode communication protocol and durable, anti-glare front surface. 3M will be showing off some conceptual applications for this multi-touch platform during CES this week.

“Over the past six months software developers from around the world have been working with the 3M multi-touch platform to develop exciting concepts for multi-touch applications,” says Chris Tsourides, business unit manager, 3M Touch Systems.

3M says its M2256PW display is “compatible with Windows 7,” meaning you don’t need any third party touch drivers, but as for Linux and Windows XP/Vista operating systems 3M will offer a multi-touch driver and software utility. They will also offer communication protocol documents for those who prefer to develop their own drivers. Additional information is available at http://www.3m.com/multitouch.

Apple's M3 Max is an incredibly powerful chip, significantly increasing Apple Silicon's CPU and GPU performance. It's gotten a ton of press, but is it necessarily faster than the fastest Windows laptops?

We can't compare the MacBook Pro 14 with the M3 Max directly to the Lenovo and Asus in that many benchmarks, particularly gaming, due to limits in testing and cross-platform compatibility. But we could compare enough to get an idea of how these various chips stack up against each other.
A brief look at architectures
The Apple M3 Max is an ARM-based system on a chip (SoC) currently at the high end of Apple Silicon's lineup. It represents the first chips made using a 3nm process and redesigned GPU architecture. On the CPU side, Apple increased the speed of its performance cores by 15% and its efficiency cores by 30% over the M2. Overall, Apple is promising a 20% to 25% improvement in performance. On the GPU side, Dynamic Caching is one technology that speeds up a variety of GPU processes, while gamers will benefit from mesh shading and hardware-accelerated ray tracing.

Here’s why people are raising concerns about the M3 Pro MacBook Pro

I published my review of the M3 Max MacBook Pro earlier this week, and suffice it to say, I was pretty impressed. I'm fond of the Space Black color, and the GPU performance in particular blew me away.

But one configuration of the new MacBook Pro went a bit more under the radar -- the M3 Pro model. Apple wasn't keen on sending this exact unit out to reviewers, instead leading with its much stronger foot, the M3 Max. And while the M3 Max and Pro were a bit closer in performance in the M2 generation, this time around, it seems as if there's more of a disparity.
